Before A Better Tomorrow transformed him into the godfather of gun-fu movies, John Woo earned a critically and commercially successful living directing another staple of Hong Kong cinema - zany screwball comedies. 1981's To Hell with the Devil is certainly one of Woo's zaniest, a remake of the Dudley Moore classic Bedazzled that packs in some of the most outlandish and off-color sight gags ever put to film. This irreverent treatment of God, the Devil, and one poor guy caught in-between borderlines on blasphemous, which will probably attract just as many viewers as it alienates. Woo fans will salivate over the climatic final battle between good and evil, which anticipates the director's later bullet ballets - albeit with alien laser beams and flying decapitated heads!
Ricky Hui (Sam and Michael's brother) stars as a gawky, wannabe singer who can't even attract the attentions of his dream girl, let alone score a recording contract. But a seemingly random meeting with God and the Devil provides Ricky with the chance of a lifetime. It's the Devil who offers him what he really wants, of course, and after signing over his soul, Ricky has Satan for his own personal genie. As Ricky's wishes play havoc with the universe, angels and demons alike prepare for a clash of Biblical proportions.

When the forces of God and Evil are locked in mortal combat, helpless human beings may be caught in the middle.
