　　With beauty that sets hearts on fire and a chilly stare that can freeze people in an instant, Tomie captivates and wields her supernatural power. The students become possessed and soon realize that behind this beauty is a powerful evil. They cut off her right ear but it regenerates. Driven to insanity, several of the boys attempt to execute her and push her off a cliff. To be certain that she cannot return, they dismember her body and dump pieces in disparate locations.

　　But Tomie, the beautiful monster, can regenerate from a single drop of blood, and returns the next morning, laughing ready to lure her next victims into lunacy.

I first came across the Tomie series when I watched the fifth instalment “Tomie : Forbidden Fruit” and have to admit was quite confused to what this was all about. I’ve since watched the original “Tomie” movie released in 1998 and the sequels bar the recent “Tomie v Tomie”, and have now found the series quite intriguing. Although not as revered as J-horrors “Ringu” and “The Grudge” and commonly referred to as the ‘slow paced’ J-horror, I do feel the series is under rated. Tomie’s manga creator Ito Junji’s premise of a demonic alien type Japanese schoolgirl, who uses her power of narcissistic seduction to cause jealousy, revenge and havoc and regenerate herself from body parts into a new version of herself, is intriguing to say the least. In “Beginnings” Tomie even regenerates from a single drop of blood. These regenerations also add to the mystery of who she is (or was...if Tomie’s ‘real’ at all!). Always signified by a single black birthmark under her left eye, Tomie’s enigma is to be cursed by eternal seduction and revenge. Tomie’s mischievous ways are of unknown origin and her physical beauty is only part of her beguiling nature. When photographs are taken of her (normally by love struck school boys!) they show another more shadow wraith type Tomie with green/yellow eyes beneath the surface.

“Tomie Beginning” is Oikawa Ataru’s Tomie ‘origins’ episode, which looks back on the school years mentioned in the original 1998 film. Here Reiko and Yamamoto return back to their school, recollecting the horrors of Tomie’s devil like influence on themselves and their school mates. Reiko was Tomie’s only friend, who witnessed her strange physical regeneration into another Tomie from a blooded bandage and of Tomie’s manic pursuit to seduce boys and anger their girl friends. Actress Rio Matsumoto as Tomie here is well played and equal to the performance from Miho Kanno who played Tomie in the original 1998 movie. Relating to the Tomie there’s an interesting and quite touching short film called (aptly) “Regeneration” on the Panorama DVD compilation “Japanese Horror Vol 3” about a professor and a young student girl friend who also regenerates from parts of herself. If you’ve never seen the Tomie series though, this could be an interesting film to start with. For the first four movies, try the Tomie 5 disk collection. “Tomie v Tomie” is also one to see and more action based, but a subtitled release as yet to surface.
