YesAsia Editorial Description
Director Lo Chen helms Too Late For Love, an epic Shaw Brothers romance set against the backdrop of the Sino-Japanese conflict. Young lovers Su Fen (Ling Bor) and Kuo Liang (Kwan Shan) get married, and while Kuo Liang goes to fight the Japanese, Su Fen goes to live with Kuo Liang's mother (Au-Yeung Sa Fei). But the years are not easy on Su Fen, who must endure the harsh and sometimes prejudicial treatment of her mother-in-law. Eventually tragedy strikes, but the event only widens the gap between these two generations of women. Can love repair what culture and generational difference has wrought? Lo Chen's brings surprisingly balanced melodrama to Too Late For Love, and paints his characters as people representative of their times and culture, instead of as outright saints or villains. The result is a fine and well-developed melodrama which went on to win numerous awards at the 1968 Taiwan Golden Horse Awards, including Best Actress, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, and an Honorable Mention for Dramatic Feature.

This, one of Shaw Brothers’ most sweeping epics, has been compared to Dr. Zhivago for the scope of its intensely personal love story. Set in war-torn China, it tells of a married couple who finds the obstacles of the warfront are, in many ways, easier than on the home front. The heartfelt saga swept the 1968 Golden Horse Awards with an Honorable Mention for Dramatic Feature, as well as winning Best Musical Score, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.

The sum is less than the parts

"Too Late for Love" has many good things going for it. Strong performances by both of the leads, Ling Bo and Kwan Shan, an indelible performance as the heartless mother-in-law by Au-yeung Sa Fei, some beautiful songs, and perhaps the best Second World War battle scenes Shaw Brothers ever produced. But it all adds up to very little in this overly manipulative tearjerker. The battle scenes, while impressive, are irrelevant to the story. Ling Bo, while a capable actress, for too much of the movie is given little to do other than look mournful and cough up blood. And the inevitable ending is telegraphed from the beginning. This film is watchable, but there are better ways for you to spend your time. |

Wartime Melodrama
| The script was good disclosing the loving couple was torn apart by the war, the bully and despise of Su Chen's mother-in-law portrayed by Au Yeng Sa Fei and the sensitive, frail, submissive Su Chen acted by Ivy Ling Po. Normally, Au Yeng played the kind and understanding mother of Ivy in most Huangmei movies, and it's amazing how well these 2 acted together in adverse roles here. The war storyline was a bit too long, nevertheless, Kwan San did well in his role. It could have been better if more songs were sung by Ivy Ling Po in the movie. |

Quite, quite, trite
|
This is another one of those Shaw Brother's movie, where the studio had to prove to the world it has the money and the power to produce big battle scenes. What a waste and what a bore! Battle scenes are only worthwhile when it is part of the story, like "War and Peace" or Shaw's own "The Blue and the Black". This is a little love story and to try to force it into epic proportion only ruins the picture. It cannot achieve being a poetic epic (because it is not that type of a storyline), and it drags as a love story because battle scenes are forced into it. Ivy Ling Po does a good acting job, and Kwan Shan is forever reliable is the lesser male lead. But all this is wasted in a movie that is too self conscious about being big. The storyline is also a little too close to Cantonese opera "Why Not Return" to be able to have any freshness. This storyline had been redone in countless old Cantonese movies and dressing it up with Shaw Brothers' gloss cannot disguise it's tritenss |

Another acting showcase for the movie goddess
|
Asian movie queen Ivy Ling Po was primarily famous for her portrayal of male scholars in huang mei operas in the 60s. Yet this beloved versatile actress always knew she was capableof so much more. She fought agaainst typecasting and won this juicy acting role and in the process was awarded a "best actress" Golden Horse award. This tearjerker comes highly recommended as the best of Ling Po's female roles. She gives a sensitive and warm portrayal as Kwan Shan's illfated wife in this sprawling war epic. I had seen this in the cinemas in the 60s but nothing prepared me for the marvellous Celestial remastering job. In this new dvd, the colours are wonderfully vivid and even dark scenes have been enhanced for our viewing pleasure. If at all possible, Ling Po looks even more beautiful and her acting more effective. This is definitely one for the collection! |
