幕前則有賀保艾杜文飾演的美國浪者米高佐敦，他與寅次郎(渥美清飾)相映成趣，同樣是一事無成的小販，四處飄泊，情場失意，兩人更在片中大玩美、日文化笑話。故事講米高賣藥為生，但日本人不吃維他命丸，令他大失預算。一貧如洗的他幸得「寅記」收留，暫得棲身之所。誰知此時寅次郎剛巧回家，他得悉自己的房間被番鬼佬佔領後，大為不悅，繼而爆發了一連串的「美、日衝突」。幸而滿男的英文老師(林寬子飾)與她的漂亮媽媽圭子(香川京子飾)突然出現，化解了「大戰」危機。當寅知道圭子是寡婦時，更馬上展開追求，再懶理番鬼佬；但令人意想不到的是，米高原來也在暗戀一個人，而她竟然是……﹗
The 24th installment in the Tora-san series. This is the first time that a foreigner was involved in the production of Tora-san. The Oscar-nominated scriptwriter Leonard Schrader has written this film with Yamada Yoji. He had also written The Man Who Stole The Sun at that time, which became a masterpiece and made him famous. Herb Edelman stars as a drifter who comes from America. he comes to Japan to sell drugs. Unfortunately, the Japanese do not take vitamins which made him lost all of his money. The Tora-san family lets him stay in the house temporarily. Suddenly, Tora-san comes back home. When he finds out that his room was being occupied by a foreigner, he becomes furious. When they are about to fight for their lives, the English teacher of Mitsui, Megumi (Htyashi Hiroko) and her mother, Keiko (Kagawa Kyoko) intervene and pour oil on troubled waters. When Tora-san discovers that Keiko is a widow, he forgets about the foreigner and begins to go after Keiko. At the same time, the foreigner is also secretly in love with someone....

An American in Shibamata

"Tora-San's Dream of Spring", the 24th film in the Tora-San series, contains so many delights, particularly for a Westerner, that it is hard to know where to begin in describing them. Veteran American character actor Herb Edelman stars as Michael Jordan (not to be confused with the basketball player), a vitamin salesman who has spent almost all of his money in a failed attempt to crack the Japanese market. Desperate to find a cheap room in which he can sleep, he ends up staying in Tora-san's empty bedroom at Toraya. The family finds his American ways very strange, but soon learns to love his kindness and sincerity. When Tora returns from the road, he is shocked and horrified to find this giant, hairy American staying in his room. Tora and Michael play out a series of racial prejudices which threaten to explode into violence ... until Mitsuo's English tutor and her mother arrive on the scene and Tora becomes smitten by the lovely middle-aged mother. One of the ongoing unspoken jokes of this fine film is the great similarity between Tora and Michael. Both are peddlers selling goods out of a suitcase. Both wear similar hats and jackets. Michael wears a Western string tie that echoes Tora's amulet. Both have hot tempers, but sweet natures. Herb Edelman does a nice job as the stranger in a strange land. (By sad coincidence, Edelman and Atsumi Kiyoshi, the actor who played Tora, died within two weeks of each other in 1996.) Also charming are the very cute Hiyashi Hiroko as Mitsuo's tutor and Kagawa Kyoko as her mother. Another treat is to see, once again, the wandering troupe of actors who pop up in several of the films in this series. A big factor in helping to make this a successful film is that director Yamada Yoji co-wrote the script with American screenwriter Leonard Schrader. This helped to flesh out Edelman's character in a realistic manner and to provide Edelman with natural dialogue that sounds distinctly American. The presence of Edelman in this film may make it a good choice for Westerners seeking to be introduced to this great film series. I recommend it very highly. |
