The 36th installment in the Tora-san series. Suggested by Keisuke Kinoshita's famous film Twenty-Four Eyes (Nijushi no hitomi, 1954), this film finds Tora-san helping runaway neighbor Akemi (Miho Jun), who left Shibamata to work as a bar hostess in Shimoda. Together they meet eleven elementary students and where Tora-san falls in love with their beautiful teacher (Kurihara Komaki). When the teacher stops in Shibamata on the way to visit her sick father, Tora-san's hopes of a lasting love are raised and dashed once again.

Akemi flees wedlock Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Tora-San's Island Encounter", the 36th film in this series, wisely offers lots of screen time to Miho Jun, who plays the Octopus's brash daughter Akemi and breathes new life into this great franchise. The loud, impulsive, often volcanic Akemi is the polar opposite of the demure and submissive prototype of a traditional Japanese wife.

As this film opens, Akemi has disappeared for a month, running away from her husband and family without leaving a trace. Her father goes on a nationally televised news program to plead for her return. The entire Shibamata neighborhood tunes in to watch him and is horrified as he becomes a weepy, blubbering embarrassment. Akemi, hiding out in Izu, sees the broadcast and calls Toraya to tell Tora's family that she wishes she could see him.

Tora, conveniently, returns from the road promptly after Akemi's call. He immediately heads off to Izu to fetch Akemi back to her husband. When he finds her, she has other ideas. She rails about her marriage to a salaryman husband too preoccupied with work to spend any time with her. She has no interest in returning to that lonely life; she has become a kind of female Tora-san, bucking conventional expectations.

Tora accompanies Akemi to a remote island, where he promptly abandons her when he meets the lovely Machiko (Kurihara Komaki), a lonely, Tokyo-born teacher who has devoted her life to her pupils on the island only to see them -- and any prospective husbands -- leave the island for opportunities elsewhere. Need I say that Tora is smitten? (Miss Kurihara, fifteen years earlier, had played Tora's love interest in "Tora-San's Grand Scheme", the fourth Tora-san film.) Surprisingly -- and perhaps not believably -- Machiko seems to embrace Tora's obvious affection for her.

With Tora otherwise occupied, Akemi spends time with Shigeru (Tanaka Ryuzo), the son of the owners of the inn at which she is staying. Shigeru quickly falls for Akemi and offers to marry her. This unexpected offer shocks Akemi into a new understanding of the impact of her abandoned marriage. She persuades Tora to accompany her immediately on a return trip to Tokyo.

Can Akemi patch things up with her hubby? Will Tora tie the knot with the teacher? Watch this humorous and heartfelt film to find out. Miho Jun's performance alone is more than worth the price of this film, but there's lots of other wonderful treats in store for viewers of "Tora-San's Island Encounter."
