A great Tora-San film
|
"Tora-San's Promise", the 28th film in this great series, is one of my favorites. For the first time, Tora falls in love with a woman who really would make a suitable bride for him, a woman for whom Tora would be a considerable step up from her previous husband. Tora returns to Tokyo from the road to find an invitation to attend a reunion of his elementary school classmates. All of his classmates arrive at the reunion looking well-scrubbed, well-dressed, and successful. Tora shows up in his usual peddler's garb and promptly offends everyone with his boorish behavior. By the end of the night, Tora is falling-down drunk and abandoned by his classmates. Tora returns to the road, where he is asked to share his hotel room with an 18 year old girl named Aiko (Kishimoto Kayoko). Aiko has been expelled from school and has run away from home after her alcoholic and abusive father has died and her mother has become remarried to a man Aiko cannot abide. (In these Tora-San films, it is amazing how many characters come from similarly broken and dysfunctional homes. I assume that this reflects Tora's downscale milieu and not Japan as a whole.) Aiko adopts Tora as a kind of foster-father, traveling with him and helping him with his peddling, but Tora chafes at her outlandishly boisterous behavior. At a festival at which he is peddling his wares, Tora encounters Mitsue (Otonashi Mikiko), the pretty wife of one of his buddies, Tsune. Tora learns that Tsune has been hospitalized with an illness and Mitsue is operating Tsune's fried octopus stand in his absence. Tora subsequently travels to Tsune's home to visit him. Tsune asks Tora to promise that, if he dies, Tora will marry Mitsue; Tora promises to do so. When leaving Tsune's home, Mitsue informs Tora that Tsune has no more than a few days left to live. Tora then ditches Aiko and returns home to Tokyo, where he blissfully dreams of a more serious and stable life of marriage to Mitsue. There is a funny episode in which Aiko comes to Toraya, where she becomes a great distraction to the printing shop next door before being fetched back to her hometown by her extremely loud, but good-natured brother. The focus of the rest of the film is on Tora and Mitsue. Tsune soon dies and Mitsue moves back to Tokyo, her hometown. Tora and Mitsue then begin an unacknowledged courtship. As things begin to turn serious, Tora's shy and nervous behavior forces Mitsue to broach the subject of Tora's promise. The indirect and obscure way in which they talk about this most important of subjects is a gem of fine writing and acting. Will Tora acknowledge and embrace the promise he made to Tsune? Will he marry this most suitable of women? Watch this excellent film to find out. I recommend "Tora-San's Promise" very, very highly. |
