Tora and the elderly artist Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Tora-San's Sunrise and Sunset", the seventeenth installment in this fine series, begins with a squabble over the school little Mitsuo has begun attending. After Mitsuo's teacher makes a slighting remark about Tora, Tora wants the tyke to transfer to a different school, but Sakura and Hiroshi feel differently. Tora storms off to drink away his anger.

At a tiny pub he encounters an old drunk who has no money. Tora pays the old man's bill and brings him back to Toraya to spend the night. At Toraya, the old man offends everyone by ordering them around. As it turns out, he believes that Tora has taken him to an inn and that Tora's family are workers at the inn. When he realizes his mistake, he draws a doodle on a piece of paper and directs Tora to sell this doodle at a particular shop. Tora is shocked to get paid 70,000 yen for this doodle; as it turns out, the old man is one of Japan's most famous painters.

On a subsequent peddling trip, Tora once again encounters the old man, who takes Tora to his hometown, where he is to be feted by the local muckety-mucks. Tora enlivens the festivities by goofing around with a pretty young geisha named Botan. Botan and Tora quickly become great friends.

Botan later comes to visit Tora at Toraya. She tells Tora that she has come to Tokyo to find a man who had swindled her out of two million yen and to seek recompense from him. She finally tracks him down, but he refuses to pay. Botan is heartbroken at the loss of her savings and Tora takes pity on her. He goes to visit the famous painter; he asks the old man to create a painting that Tora can sell to raise cash for Botan. The old man refuses, telling Tora that he never paints simply to earn money. Tora finds this response to be heartless.

Can Tora do anything to help his geisha friend? Will the old artist have a change of heart? Watch "Tora-San's Sunrise and Sunset" to find out. This is a minor entry in the series, but it is consistently entertaining and features fine performances by Taichi Kiwako as the geisha and Uno Jukichi as the artist. I recommend "Sunrise and Sunset".
