The 30th instalment in the Tora-san series. This is one of the most commercially successful films of the Tora-san series because of the two major stars involved in this production. Sawada Kenji was one of the most popular singers/actors in Japan at the time, and Tanaka Yuko will become famous through the TV series "Oshin". Yamada Yoji freely adapts Cyrano de Bergerac for this Tora-san movie. At the Yuhira Hot Springs in Oita, Tora-san helps a shy but handsome zookeeper (pop star/actor Sawada Kenji) after both fall in love with a pretty department store worker (Tanaka Yuko). In real life, Sawada and Tanaka began dating during production and eventually married in 1989.

Another fine Tora-San film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Tora-San, the Expert", the thirtieth film in Yamada Yoji's excellent series, resulted in an unexpected scandal. But first the story... Tora, while on one of his peddling trips, stays at a spa at which handsome, young Saburo (pop star Sawada Kenji) also stays. Saburo is bringing his mother's ashes to her hometown for burial; 30 years earlier, his mother had been a popular employee at the spa. The spa's owner and Tora arrange for a funeral ceremony, a ceremony which Tora disrupts by inadvertently tossing burning incense down the back of the presiding priest.

Also staying at the inn are two department store workers from Tokyo. One of them, the lovely, bespectacled, and extremely shy Keiko (Tanaka Yuko) is smitten by the good-looking and filial Saburo, who resembles the ideal man for whom she has been searching. Saburo, also tongue-tied and shy, is equally smitten by Keiko's quiet beauty. When Keiko embarks back to Tokyo, Saburo abruptly blurts out to her, "Will you be my friend?" Keiko, taken aback by the unexpected, sudden, and public nature of the question, rejects the advance.

Saburo turns to Tora for help in his pursuit. As you might expect, Tora's advice and interventions are a mixed blessing. Will Tora succeed in bringing the young lovers together or will his inept efforts cause a permanent break? Watch this warm-hearted little gem to find out.

The film's opening dream sequence is an elaborate "West Side Story"-style song and dance number starring pop singer Sawada, who acquits himself well in this film. Tanaka Yuko, however, steals the show by capturing perfectly the earnest yearning of young love. (The pairing of Sawada and Tanaka resulted in scandal, as their on-screen chemistry led to an off-screen adulterous romance and to Sawada's divorce.)

For me, the best part of this movie is Tora's unspoken reaction to Saburo and Keiko's mutual love, as he realizes that he likely never will experience the fruition of such a romance in his own life. There is no one better than Atsumi Kiyoshi at emoting such moments of silent despair. I recommend "Tora-San, the Expert" highly for a general audience.
