"Tora-San's The Go-Between", the 35th film in the Tora-San series, tells a warm-hearted, funny, and engaging tale. Tora and a peddling friend are lounging in Kyushu when they see a bent-over old woman fall. They help her to her home, then, upon her invitation, join her for an evening of octopus, sake, and song. They end up spending the night in the old woman's home, but early in the morning they are awakened to find the old woman dying in peace and prayer. Tora and his friend stay for her Christian funeral service. There Tora meets Wakana (Higuchi Kanako), the old woman's pretty twenty-something granddaughter. We learn that Wakana was born to unmarried parents, that her father abandoned the family and her mother committed suicide, and that Wakana was raised by her grandmother. Wakana sends a letter to Tora thanking him for his kindness to her grandmother. Tora, naturally, takes the opportunity to visit the young woman. He quickly becomes smitten with her, but finds that her law student neighbor (Hirata Mitsuru) also loves her, although he is too shy to express it. There follows a scene in which Tora dismissively mentions to Wakana that the law student loves her and Wakana acknowledges that she knows it. The beauty of the scene, so typical of the magic that director Yamada Yoji works, is its unspoken subtext in which Tora (a) expresses his own interest in Wakana, (b) becomes aware that Wakana is interested in the student, not him, (c) is crestfallen by this realization, but (d) immediately chooses to do the right thing by bringing the young pair together. The subtle ease with which Yamada and actor Atsumi Kiyoshi pull off this emotionally complex scene is testimony to their greatness. Can Tora succeed in bringing the shy twosome together? Will his advice help or hinder the law student? There are lots of laughs along the way to the resolution of these questions. There also are laughs in the film's opening dream sequence, a spoof of "The Ballad of Narayama", a classic story told in many film versions. The film nicely contrasts the warmth of the family life that fills the Toraya sweet shop with the loneliness of the lives of Wakana and the law student. Director Yamada uses this contrast to illustrate the comforts of lives rooted in family and community. "Tora-San's The Go-Between" is a wonderfully warm and entertaining film. I recommend it highly. |
