Based on the real-life story of Reverend Ju Gi Chul, who became the martyr of the Korean Protestant Church during the Japanese colonial period, the Toward the High Place tells a touching story of one man's courageous struggle for national independence and religious freedom. One of the most acclaimed Korean films of the period, this 1977 classic offers a message of hope through the tragic yet victorious story of a legendary figure who helped define the face of Korean Christianity.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Yim Won Shick (Mother, 1976), Toward the High Place stars veteran actors Lee Soon Jae (Yi San), Shin Young Kyun (Prince Yeonsan), and Ko Eun Ah (The Seaside Village). Persecuted for his refusal to worship Shinto (an ancient Japanese religion) deities, Reverend Ju ends up serving a number of prison sentences over the course of seven grueling years and eventually dies while incarcerated in 1944, just one year short of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule.

- 1938년 평양 문창교회의 주기철 목사님은 한국의 예루살렘이라 일컫는 선정현으로 향한다.

조선독립운동에 참여한 주기철은 일본헌병의 추적 끝에 처녀 안갑수 집에 피신한다. 일본이 전 조선인에게 신사참배를 강요하니 기독교로서는 큰 충격이 아닐 수 없었다. 주기철은 오점도라는 신자와 재혼하여 평양 산정현교회로 부임하여 예배당을 신축한다. 그러나 헌당식을 며칠 앞두고 주기철은 구속되며 신사참배의 안은 가결된다. 주기철 목사는 파면되고 교회당은 폐교당한다. 주목사는 1944년 4월 20일 밤 형무소에서 순교하고 만다. 평양의 거리엔 수많은 성도들 속에 영구가 떠난다. 주기철 목사는 주님의 곁으로 가신것이다.
