Perhaps second only to Murakami Takashi in renown and influence in Japan's pop art movement, acclaimed artist Nara Yoshitomo has built a cult following around the world with his deceptively simple artwork. His manga-inspired sculptures and illustrations are seemingly stark and innocent - a white puppy, bauble-head wide-eyed children in soft colors and simple lines - but at times convey unsettling elements of horror and threat. In his subjects' upturned faces, angled eyes, and curiously probing expressions, consumers have seen cuteness and empathy and art critics depth, leading his work to be found in galleries and museums around the world, not to mention on t-shirts and ashtrays.

Directed by Sakabe Koji, Traveling with Yoshitomo Nara is a fascinating documentary about this visionary artist who straddles the worlds of pop culture and fine art. Sakabe's camera follows Nara for 240 days as he sets about creating his largest piece of work ever, an imaginary town formed by his sculptures and images. The camera stays close as Nara travels around the world to see different cities for inspiration, works silently in his studio, and speaks candidly about his art.

1959年12月5日早晨，一顆小星星降落在這個美麗的星球上。

奈良美智從小就不愛說話，有「空想癖」的他，每天上課都沉浸在自己的小小幻想中，最愛用畫筆和世界溝通，青春期則在反戰、搖滾樂的叛逆心情中度過。大學時曾二度當起背包客，前往歐洲旅行，深深被其自由學習環境所感動，畢業後毅然決定出國深造。

即使作品廣為紐約MOMA當代美術館、洛杉磯現代美術館等地收藏，特製商品紅遍半片天，奈良依舊不改害羞而單純樸實的個性，獨自住在東京市郊的小屋，喜愛喝新發售的飲料，用蓮蓬頭的水洗衣服。房間裡塞滿了畫迷們的來信，是因為「它們比日用品更重要」。習慣獨自創作的他，在凌亂如倉庫的工作室中，只要把搖滾樂調到最大聲，便自得其樂地埋首在畫室中創作出一幅幅感動人心的作品。

「人何以為人」？奈良美智不斷向世界提出這個永恆的質疑。筆下的大眼妹時而手拿小刀，時而頭上綁著繃帶或插了根冒著血的釘子，一個個就像是熱血的青年革命份子，在清楚洞察這個世界之後，隨時準備以瘦小身軀揭開所有虛偽、壓抑、和充滿陰謀的假面具。我們可以單純地將奈良美智的作品視為漫畫或是值得收藏的特殊品牌，然而也可以透過他丟出的問題，探索面對最原始、最真實的自我，這便是奈良筆下女孩們最深得人心的原因了。

國際炙手可熱的當代藝術家奈良美智，以獨特的手繪畫風創造出「邪惡大眼妹」，近年來更和日本暢銷作家吉本芭娜娜合作插畫小說，廣受日本及台灣觀眾的喜愛。

為何「大眼妹」天真爛漫的外表下卻用世故眼光睥睨世界？本片透過導演坂部康二的鏡頭，和青春偶像宮崎葵細膩嗓音的詮釋，帶領觀眾揭開大眼妹的神秘面紗，更直擊奈良美智從未公開的私密創作過程，深刻體驗「大眼妹」在觀眾間產生的無限魅力和感動。

電影也詳實紀錄了和奈良美智一同工作的日本設計團隊graf，從發想、設計到製作，巡迴全球創造出無數個充滿夢想的小屋。四處取材的奔波、搬運器材的汗水和熬夜工作的疲累，不僅成就了奈良美智的創作巔峰，更讓所有觀眾看見心中難得的溫暖。

2006年夏，奈良美智回顧展「A to Z」受到前所未有的熱烈回響。位於僅18萬人居住的家鄉，募集到一萬三千多人的志工協助，期間更湧入八萬人次參觀。展出A到Z 共26個房間，陳列大眼妹、夢遊娃娃、流淚的狗等著名作品。「A to Z」意涵著事情的開始、經歷跟結束，也暗喻著奈良美智從生命原點開始，從未間斷過的創作築夢之旅……
