YesAsia Editorial Description

Chow Yun Fat returns to the underworld in Triads The Inside Story, a gripping triad drama directed by Taylor Wong. Chow Yun Fat stars as a peaceful family man who inherits the family business when his father dies. The problem: the family business is a full-fledged triad that has its fingers firmly entrenched in multiple illegal activities. Chow isn't comfortable with the triad life, and is willing to watch quietly before making his decisions on what to do with his new business. But some of his lieutenants, including triad film luminaries Sing Fui On and Roy Cheung, are more than willing to fill the leadership void. When the rival triads make their presence known, it's up to Chow to stand up and be counted, or go quietly as his father did. Tough triad melodrama, potent themes of brotherhood, and the ever-charismatic Chow Yun Fat combine to righteously represent in Triads The Inside Story!

The boss of the Hung Hing triad society is murdered. His son, Lee Man Ho, comes back to Hong Kong to organise the funeral. The Hung Hing elders want Ho to succeed his father in the triad. Ho refuses and states that it is against his wishes to be part of a triad society. He advises them to rent the group's various businesses to counterparts so as to avoid the trouble of taking care of them. The businesses are rented out smoothly. However, other triads ruin them all, and Hung Hing is blamed. Ho is daring enough to face the leaders of other groups and successfully settles some disputes. Everyone has confidence in him. But Ho insists that he will not join them. When Ho sets an enemy free, Yeung Kong is not satisfied. He loses his temper and has a fight with Tse Shing. Shing is later murdered and Dumb Keung mistakenly believes that Kong is the murderer. When Keung finds Kong, he dies accidentally. Kong knows that Hung Hing will not let him go easily. He joins a gang without thinking and helps them to smuggle vehicles. As soon as Ho learns about this, he rushes to the terminal. However, it is too late. Kong has been set up and is already detained by police. Ho then finds out that the head of the gang is the one who killed his father. He rushes out of the police barricade with Kong and kills the head of the gang. Kong is grateful to Ho and tells the police he is the murderer.

Professional Review of "Triads The Inside Story (Joy Sales Version) (Hong Kong Version) "

May 10, 2006

This professional review refers to Triads The Inside Story (Joy Sales Version) (Hong Kong Version)
1989 was the year that Category III movies were invented, and Triads: The Inside Story is one of the first movies rated Category III not for the blood n'gore, or the acres of exposed flesh, but because it showed the rituals and language of the triads, a big no-no to the HK colonial government well aware of the anti-Western bias of Chinese secret societies and triads.

The authenticity meter is set on "High" with a number of triad regulars on display (Roy Cheung, famous for School on Fire; Shing Fui-on, famous for portraying short-tempered thugs; Kelvin Wong, who's made a career of playing smarmy young back-stabbers; and Chan Wai-man, Tiger Au in Jackie Chan's Project A II who is the real thing: an ex-triad leader turned actor). In the first five minutes the camera soaks up a dragon dance ceremony as a triad negotiation turns into a blood-soaked beatdown. Choppers are produced and a running battle climaxes with the death of beloved Uncle Kwan, the head of the Hung Ching triad. His nebbish nephew, Chow Yun-fat, living in New York and trying to start a realty company, comes back to Hong Kong for the funeral and is immediately plunged into the byzantine arcana of funerals triad-style.

Everyone wants Chow to take over the family criminal fraternity, but he has his wife and son in tow and doesn't want to dirty his hands. Already dirtied, point out his triad buddies. Chow pouts. Meanwhile, a leaderless triad is a vulnerable triad and the Coffin Rope gang is horning in on their turf in a series of vicious, flesh-splitting encounters. Goaded into action by all the useless peacock strutting and finger-pointing competitions between rival triads, Chow finally takes the helm of the Hung Ching society, bringing business school tactics to street crime.

His MBA methods are effective, Hung Ching avoids the cops and turns a healthy profit, but Chow gets so caught up in proving how clever he is that he's caught completely off guard when the Coffin Ropes get frustrated and whip out their choppers. His skill with contracts does him no good here, and within moments he's entangled in a web of debt to the soft, squishy people who put their flesh between his head and a rapidly descending blade. Chow's sterile, displaced life in America is starkly contrasted with the rich social structure and traditions of the Hung Ching society as he tries to navigate his way between committing criminal acts, and becoming a criminal himself.

Like steel bands around his skull the tensions increase as Shing (Chan Wai-man), his chosen leader, decides he doesn't want the job, and Roy Cheung begins acting reckless trying to spur Chow into staying head of Hung Ching forever.

Disappointing to say the least Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
Have you ever seen a film that seems more concentrated on trying to be realistic rather than good Plot, Characters or anything else for that matter? Triads is one of those films, and it's quite a bland film with quite uninteresting characters, even someone of the caliber of Chow Yun Fat doesn't even shine.

The Film revolves around the Death of a Triad Boss during a Negotiation between two Rival Triad gangs. The boss's son, Ho (Chow Yun Fat) is a well off Real Estate agent living in the USA with a wife and a son, who return with him for his Father's Funeral.

When Ho and his family returns, the former gang members of his late father's Syndicate try to get him to become the new Boss, but Ho is reluctant to abandon his happy life with his wife and son in America and enter the world of the Triads in Hong Kong. In the end, the choice that he makes affects not just himself and his family, but the lives of those in his father's gang, a lesson he learns all to quickly...

Sounds familiar? As far as Godfather Rip-offs go, this one is probably not the worst. While most performances are a reflection of the bland characters, the supporting cast of the film tries really hard to make this film worth watching, and includes decent perfomances by Triad film regulars Kenneth Tsang, Roy Cheung and Shing Fui On, as well as real-life Triad Chan Wai Man, who also provided much of the background information for the film, such as the Triad rituals and codes and the like.

For it's credit, this film was quite a bold statement at the time, as if features authentic Triad rituals and the like, which is why it's given a Category III rating. The good people at Joy sales have also done a great job with this film in not just restoring and remastering it, but providing a great deal of special features in relation to the triad world, which provide lots of insightful information into the Triad World, that alone i feel is worth an extra half a star.

Overall, the film and characters are quite boring, and the action somewhat haphazard, but it's still quite an important film in the history of HK Cinema. Rather than Entertainment, this film should be viewed as a Museum piece of sorts, and will be of great interest for fans of the genre, especially at such a bargain price. Everyone else should probably stay away from this film.

Although this film was made in the mid 80's I still consider it to be one of the best triad films ever made(alongside Young and Dangerous) and it is a definitely must see for all Chow Yun Fat fans.
