홍콩영화계에 SFX를 본격적으로 도입하고 발전시킨 공로로 홍콩의 스필버그로 널리 알려진 ‘서극’ 감독의 작품으로 90년대에 주로 무협영화를 다루던 그가 음식을 소재로 한 1995년‘금옥만당’에 이어 1996년 ‘대삼원'으로 로맨틱 액션이라는 그의 색다른 면을 연출해 보였다.
젊은이들 감각에 맞는 재미있고 세련된 사랑 이야기를 다룬 이 영화는‘금옥만당’의 장국영, 원영의 콤비에 이어 류청운이 가세한 작품이다.
뮤직 비디오같은 화려한 영상으로 유명한 왕가위감독의 「해피투게더」, 「동사서독」, 「중경삼림」, 외 「영웅」,「무간도」,「토끼울타리」등을 촬영한 두가풍(크리스토퍼 도일)이 촬영. 특히 「동사서독」은 1994년 베니스영화제 촬영상을 수상하기도 했다.
이상주의자인 홍종(장국영)은 자신의 모든 것을 바쳐 신의 위대한 사랑을 실천하기로 맹세한 젊은 신부이다.
어려부터 신부가 되기로 결심하고 신의 위대한 사랑을 실천하려고 마음먹은 사람이다 어느 날 그는 우연한 기회에 창녀 백설화(원영의)를 만나게 되는데 그녀는 속마음을 숨기는 것이 자신을 보호하는 일이라고 생각하고 거짓말을 하지만 본심은 선량한 여자다.
홍종은 고해성사를 통해 백설화가 같은 처지의 친구들을 돕기위해 나서다가 고리대금업자에게 시달림을 받고 있는 사실을 고해성사를 통해 알게된다. 한편 형사인 유청발(유청운)은 폭력조직이 창녀들을 이용해 갑부들을 협박하고 있다는 정보를 입수하고 수사를 시작한다.
이 과정에서 백설화가 이 사건과 연루되어 있다고 생각한 유청발은 신부로 가장하여 교회에 들어가 고해성사까지 엿듣는 등 홍종과 마찰을 일으킨다.
홍종은 백설화 등을 돕기 위해 직접 창녀소굴로 접근하는데, 폭력조직에선 그를 신흥조직의 일원으로 오해해 함부로 건드리지 못하는 웃지못할 갖가지 해프닝이 벌어진다.
창녀들도 처음엔 경계하지만 점차 홍종의 진심어린 태도에 감화되고 사랑을 느끼게 된다. 홍종은 그들중에서 가창력이 있는 네 명을 뽑아 합창단을 조직해 경연대회에 출전하기로 하지만 백설화는 폭력집단에 의해 납치되는 사건이 일어나게 되는데…

| I bought this dvd only because of dear Leslie and he is different in this movie cause he isn't involved in any relationships, so to speak. As a rookie catholic priest trying to save the 4 prostitutes, his methods are not only unauthordox but also unheard of. So is it possible that most girls fall in love with this gorgeous priest? (even brides do during their wedding ceremony)! A good storyline with good ending and lots of laughs inbetween. A skinny Anita Yuen (she's now twice her size if you see her in Protege with Andy Lau) is quite good and the abnoxious cop with his no-brain sidekick/partner only helps make the circumstances more confusing and funny. |

This one is fun!

Tsui Hark and his all-star cast take big risks in "Tri-Star" and it all pays off in a truly hilarious and charming comedy. Leslie Cheung plays an earnest, but very unorthodox, young Catholic priest, who chooses to live with four bar girls in order to pull them out of the skin trade. Anita Yuen is adorable as one of the bar girls, whose fate becomes tied up in mountains of debts she owes to mobsters. Sean Lau plays a short-fused cop who is convinced that Leslie and Anita are up to no good. Mix them all together with a some fast-paced action and goofy sight gags and you get an hour and forty minutes of great silly and heartwarming entertainment. You can't go wrong with this one and I highly recommend it. |

Not to spectactular movie but irresistably charmin
| The story and the plot itself are not much to marvel at but the cast and the jokes will make any fan smile for hours. I remember seeing Leslie Cheung in his elvis outfit and I just could not help but feel giddy. Lau Ching Wan also plays a rather ridiculous cop but he plays it with such intensity and determination that the weirdness and rudeness of the character all work out in the end to give audiences one hiliarious time watching. |
