Taiwan diva A-Mei Chang takes to the stage in Japan to star in the Japanese version of Puccini's famous opera Turandot. Chang portrays the title role of Turandot, a beautiful and icy Chinese princess who agrees to wed whomever can answer three riddles. Suitors who fail to pass her test, however, are beheaded. Falling in love with Turandot at first sight, the Prince of Tartary, whose people have been conquered by the ruling Chinese dynasty, rises to the challenge.

Staged in Japan in spring of 2008, Turandot is a truly star-studded production both on stage and off. Directed by world-renowned theater director Miyamoto Amon, the musical features costume design by Wada Emi (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) and newly written music by master composer Hisaishi Joe and lyricist Mori Yukinojo. Acclaimed actors Kishitani Goro and Nakamura Shido co-star, along with Saotome Taichi, Kitamura Yukiya, and Hello! Project idol Abe Natsumi. The dazzling musical also integrates choreography by American dance choreographer Darren Lee and performances from a Shaolin martial arts team.

東方の島国の皇太子カラフは、側近のティムールと侍女のリューを従えて、海を越え黄金の都へとやってきた。この国には、美しい女帝トゥーランドットに求婚する王子たちが各国から訪れていたが、結婚の条件である"女帝の3つの質問"に答えることができず、満月の夜になると首をはねられていた。それを知ったカラフは驚愕し憤るが、兄との政争に敗れて国を追われ失うものの無い彼は、ティムールからの勧めもあって挑戦者として名乗りをあげることに。そして、見事に回答してみせるが、非情なワン将軍はそれを認めずカラフを投獄してしまう。実はワン将軍は女帝を慕っていたのだ。一方、一目見たときからカラフのことが気になっていたトゥーランドットは、唯一心を許せる宦官のミンに心の内を吐露するが…。
プッチーニの高名な遺作を現代の視点で蘇らせたオリジナル・ミュージカル。当代の一流スタッフとキャストをそろえ、赤坂ACTシアターのグランド・オープニングを飾った超話題作だ。演出家宮本亜門のもと、衣装を世界のワダエミが担当。久石譲が全曲をオリジナルで書き下ろし、ヒット・メーカーの森雪之丞が歌詞を手掛けた。加えて、ブロードウェイのトップダンサーで振付師のダレン・リーも振付担当として参加。また、孤高の女帝トゥーランドット役に、圧倒的な歌唱力から"台湾の誇り"と称えられる"アジアの歌姫"アーメイを起用したほか、岸谷五朗、中村獅童、早乙女太一、北村有起哉など、主役級の俳優陣が目白押し。更に、本場中国の少林武術チームが参加した迫力の武術シーンも盛り込まれるなど、総勢60名を超えるキャストの出演で繰り広げられる、ダイナミックかつスペクタクルな物語世界に圧倒される。
