Three tales of growing up Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Sylvia Chang works wonders both in front of and behind the scenes in this complex tale about growing up. The film tells three different stories that only incidentally intersect.

Sylvia Chang plays a married woman and mother who runs a flower shop. One day, while delivering flowers, she discovers that her husband has a second wife and child. The film illustrates how she copes with this stunning revelation.

Rene Liu's character is a self-involved flight attendant who juggles boyfriends on multiple continents, but can't relieve her essential loneliness. Her messy life comes crashing down around her before she is able to become more emotionally mature.

Li Sijie plays a wide-eyed small town girl from Malaysia who comes to Taipei with hopes of becoming a pop star. But her down-at-the-heels Svengali, played by Anthony Wong, has no clue how to promote the Sunday Sisters, the singing duo he has created.

All three stars deliver fine performances, but Sylvia Chang and Li Sijie really stand out. Chang is amazingly skilled at showing the complex range of emotions of her broken middle-aged woman. And Li Sijie is incandescent.

I particularly appreciated Sylvia Chang's directorial work. It could not have been easy weaving together these three separate stories, but Chang does so very effectively. The shifts from one character to another never feel abrupt or confusing; the movie runs like clockwork. And it looks great.

Very, very highly recommended by your humble servant.

enjoyable.. Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I rented this movie on a wim and have to say it wasn't too bad.To an extent '20 30 40' delivers - it has the capability of appealing to a wide audience; we witness the trials and tribulations of three women aged 20, 30 and 40 dealing with love and sexuality. It even overlaps onto homosexual themes with the relationships of the 20 year old girl with her friend whom she begins to form a close bond with along the road to stardom, quite risque for it's market. The style of the film is bright and colourful and full of possitive messages about female friendships but also the harsh reality of real life as we witness male/female relationships falling appart and dreams not realised.
It was great for me to learn that the director of this film was a woman, Angelica Lee (who also plays Lily) concidering the lack of female directors in Hollywood let alone Chinese film institutions. The feminine touch comes across wonderfully, beautifully and sometimes sadly too.
I didn't have any preconcieved expectations about the movie before hand, perhaps if I did I might have been a little disappointed.
The story is unfortunately a little slow and one might need patience to enjoy it. It also has what some may concider an unsatisfactory ending as the women don't live 'happily ever after' as Hollywood might have it. Yet this element of realism is something rather inspired as many people have clearly come to appreciate concidering the films popularity/award nominations.
In summary a good watch. touching and lovely as wel as containing elements of originality!

This is the best movie of its Kind Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I'd say after I watched this movie, my perspective about being single changed, from "it's no big deal!" to "what am really I going to do being single for the rest of my life"

I think this movie is really worth seeing, if you'd like to know more about women. Besides the characters were pretty and gave a great performance. It's definitely an awarding winning movie.
