It's two Jackie Chans for the price of one as the screen legend does double duty in The Twin Dragons! Chan plays a pair of twin brothers separated at birth, who rediscover one another en route to lots of fighting twin hijinks! Ma Yao (Jackie Chan) grew up in America, and is now a famous music composer/conductor. Tramp (Jackie Chan again) stayed in Hong Kong and is now a lowly mechanic and henchman for wacky triad Teddy Robin Kwan. When Ma Yao heads to Hong Kong for a concert, the two lost brothers find each other and do a Prince and the Pauper-like switch that guarantees mistaken identity and comedy situations aplenty. The two also switch girlfriends, who are ably played by the luminous Maggie Cheung and the buxom Nina Li. But gangsters and bad circumstances come calling, so the twins must fight together. But only one of them can actually fight!
Produced as a benefit for the Hong Kong Director's Guild, The Twin Dragons features umpteen cameos from popular Hong Kong directors, including such filmmakers as John Woo, Wong Jing, Lau Kar Leung, Sylvia Chang, Peter Chan, Ann Hui, and Yuen Woo Ping! Tsui Hark and Ringo Lam handle actual directing duties on The Twin Dragons, an entertaining piñata of a movie that's half action, half comedy, and all undeniable Jackie Chan charm!

When I received this DVD of "Twin Dragons," I thought it was going to be a completely remastered version of the film. But it wasn't. The picture quality is actually a bit worse than the Universe Laser DVD. It's rather dark and less clear. The sound is also in 2.0, which means that the sound effects dominate the music and other noise. Fortune Star really let's us down here. Based on all the other movies they have released in such excellent quality, this is almost inexcusable. Now of course, their are some good points. This DVD is 16x9 enhanced, so those with widescreen televisions will not be disappointed. This release also comes with original trailers, photo albums and original posters. The English subtitles are also new and improved. The DVD case comes with a reversible cover! On one side, it's all written in Chinese. Flip it over, it's English! There is a DVD holder on both sides inside the box, so you can flip it whichever way you want! Now, although Fortune Star did not cut out any footage, the feature film on this DVD is 4 minute shorter than Universe Laser's, due to a speed-up issue. It does make the fight scenes more exciting though! |

Considering the fact that this is a fortune star product, I was a bit disappointed when I got it. Indeed, it is 16x9 enchanced. so those with widescreen TVs will not be disappointed. But I don't think Fortune Star remastered the picture like they usally do. The picture is a bit darker than Universe Lasers and moves as if there are no frames. Although I am pleased that the sound here is in sync with the video, whereas in the UV version, the sound is only a split second out of sync. And when it comes to sound, it's only Dolby 2.0, Cantonese or Mandarin. No 5.0, so that means that the sound effects are much louder than the music and the background noise. All-in-all, this DVD is better than Universe Laser's but not much. It's not all it's hyped up to be. The UV version is most likely out of print by now, so you should buy this one. But don't expect the BEST version of this movie ever. |
