Also known by the English title Fireworks, Should We See It From the Side or the Bottom, Iwai's fifty-minute film lovingly relates two stories of youthful discovery. A group of boys are on their way to a fireworks show. Meanwhile, one of the boys is considering running away with a female classmate who's upset over her parents' decision to get a divorce. Shunji Iwai creates believably innocent adolescent characters who discover minute truths about life through their innocent experiences and precious friendships. Full of quiet, beautifully realized moments, Fireworks, Should We See It From the Side or the Bottom is a touching and sweetly entertaining work from one of Japanese Cinema's modern masters.

小学生の典道らは、打ち上げ花火を横から見ると丸いのか平べったいのか…という素朴な疑問を持ち、花火大会の夜、その答えを見つけに近くの灯台に行くことを計画する。一方、両親の離婚に傷つく少女・なずなはその日、駆け落ちを企てようとしていた…。
もともとは'93年にフジテレビのドラマ「ifもしも」の一編として放映され、TVドラマにもかかわらず監督の岩井俊二が日本映画監督協会新人賞を受賞してしまったという作品。人生において誰もが経験するであろう宝石のような子供の頃の夏の一日を描いた、才気あふれる一編。DVD化にあたっては監督自らが画像に手をかけ、より高画質にバージョンアップ。'95年に「undo」とともに劇場公開された作品だが、今回は未公開シーンを追加したDVDだけのバージョンとなっている。
