Under the Sky of Seoul (1961) is a delightful family comedy set during the defining decade of Korean modernization. Now released on remastered DVD, this sitcom-style comedy chronicles a series of unfortunate events that befall a traditional medicine doctor whose rigid values and excessive rivalry with a Western practitioner (an OB/GYN who also happens to be his daughter's lover) drives him to self-destruction. Hailed by critics and audiences alike for its witty and sophisticated portrayal of lower-middle class life in Seoul at a time when old-fashioned, conservative values were constantly challenged by modern idealism, the film features an amazing cast of famous stars such as Kim Seung Ho, Heo Jang Kang, and Kim Hui Gap. Moreover, the film gave its first-time director Lee Hyung Pyo plenty of international exposure through its screening at the 9th Asia Film Festival and the 3rd Frankfurt Film Festival.

Chinese medicine practitioner Hak Gyu (Kim Seung Ho) is as stubborn as a mule - so much so that not a day goes by without him getting into some sort of conflict with his family. His widowed daughter (Choi Eun Hee) is seeing Du Yeol (Kim Jin Kyu), an obstetrician despite her father's disapproval. In fact, Hak Gyu's dislike for Du Yeol stems from the growing rivalry between the two fields of medicine: the old Chinese way and the new Western form. But soon his jealousy for the young doctor becomes uncontrollable when his rival runs for a public office. Hak Gyu devises an outrageous plan to outdo the young man as well as thwart his daughter's relationship, but will it work?

서울 작은 골목의 터줏대감인 한의사 김학규(김승호)는 쓸데없는 심술을 부려 아내(한은진), 자식들과 불화를 겪는다. 나하나 미장원을 경영하는 젊은 미망인인 딸 김현옥(최은희)은 건너편의 산부인과 의사 최두열(김진규)과 서로 좋아 지내지만, 양의를 못마땅하게 여기는 김학규는 최두열을 시기하고 질투하여 사사건건 그의 일을 방해한다. 아들 김현구(신영균)는 동네 술집 여주인(황정순)의 딸 점례와 사귀는데 점례가 임신을 해 결혼을 하려고 하나 김학규는 반대하며 아들을 쫓아낸다. 한편 관상쟁이 박주사(허장강), 복덕방 주인 노몽현(김희갑)과 유유자적하며 최두열을 방해할 궁리만 짜내던 김학규는 최두열이 시의원 선거에 나간다는 소식을 듣고 자신도 입후보한다. 전 재산을 쏟아 부으며 선거에 몰두하지만 결국 낙선의 고배를 마신다. 자신의 고집으로 실패를 겪은 김학규는 아들 내외를 받아들이고 딸의 결혼도 승낙한다.

당대를 대표하는 배우들의 뛰어난 연기앙상블과 함께, 신•구세력의 교체라는 당시의 민감한 주제를, 아옹다옹하는 서민들을 통해 세련된 코미디로 완성해낸다. 특히 좁은 골목을 유려하게 움직이며 각 인물에서 인물로 소개를 하며 넘어가는 첫 장면에서 이형표 감독은 데뷔작임에도 완성도 있는 말끔한 연출력을 보여준다.
<서울의 지붕 밑>은 오프닝의 내레이션 ‘새로운 시대와 낡은 시대가 어깨를 나란히 하는 시대’는 이 영화를 압축적으로 설명해준다. 구세대로 대표되는 한의 김승호와 신세대로 대표되는 양의 김진규의 싸움에서 구세대인 김승호의 가치관은 결국 쓸데없는 고집이나 아집으로 여겨지고 구세대는 합리적인 신세대의 뜻에 따르게 된다. 그의 아집은 결국 많은 재산을 잃는 대가를 치르고 나서야 끝이 난다. 그리고 자식들의 연애와 혼사에 일일이 개입하려는 그의 태도는 쓸데없는 짓으로 비판 받는다. 그렇게 해서 구세대-한의-전통적 가치관과 문화는 신세대-양의-새로운 가치관과 합리적 문화로 대체된다.

이 영화의 또 다른 재미는 당대 최고 배우들의 뛰어난 연기와 앙상블에서 나온다. 전통적인 가부장인 김승호, 그런 남편을 타박하지만 결국 남편의 뜻을 따르는 전통적인 아내 한은진, 미장원을 경영하는 큰 딸 최은희, 큰 딸을 좋아하는 김진규 등도 그렇지만, 허장강과 김희갑의 얄미울 정도로 능청스럽고도 궁상맞은 연기는 큰 웃음을 준다.

"Under the Sky of Seoul" is unusual in its balance of melodrama and comedy. Set after the end of the Korean War, it stars Kim Seung Ho as Kim Hak Gyu, a curmudgeonly doctor of traditional medicine who wages unending war against modernization. The film begins as melodrama as we meet Kim, his long-suffering wife (Han Eun Jin), his war-widow daughter Hyon Ok (Choi Eun Hee), and his unemployed college graduate son Hyun Gu (Shin Young Kyun). The daughter is wooed by Dr. Choi, a young doctor practicing Western medicine across the street from Hak Gyu; Hak Gyu hates Dr. Choi with a passion, viewing him as a rival and an interloper. He forbids any communication between Hyon Ok and Dr. Choi, a futile ban that serves only to make his daughter feel guilty. For their son, Hak Gyu and his wife seek an arranged marriage to the homely daughter of a wealthy family; Hyun Gu has other ideas. He has fallen in love with (and impregnated) the pretty daughter of a saloon-keeper in the neighborhood. All of these tensions threaten to blow the Kim family apart.

Having set the stage for melodrama in its first 25 minutes, the film shifts tone to comedy drawn from the interaction among the bumptious Hak Gyu and his friends and patients. The film then alternates between development of the dramatic storylines of the conflicts between Hak Gyu and his offspring, as they attempt to carve out lives independent of the demands of their overbearing father, and what are essentially set comic bits, usually involving schemes by Hak Gyu and his friends to make money. It testifies to first-time director Lee Hyung Pyo's skill at juggling drama and comedy that, until very near the end, it is impossible to tell whether the movie will conclude with a happy ending or with the destruction of Hak Gyu's family.

The story is brought to its culmination when Hak Gyu learns that Dr. Choi is running for a seat on Seoul's City Council. Unwilling to let Dr. Choi have any victory, Hak Gyu decides that he, too, will run for the Council. This decision proves to be fateful and leads to ... a very satisfying conclusion to the film. "Under the Sky of Seoul" offers a very wise and entertaining glimpse of life as it really was lived on the streets of Seoul. This DVD of the film clearly was assembled from an assortment of prints; its image quality varies from clear and crisp in some scenes to very dark and murky in others. The film has a timeless quality that should appeal to a wide audience.
