TVB's 2003 drama Ups and Downs in the Sea of Love takes romance to the high seas for a lighthearted love story that has a thing or two to say about modern marriage and relationships. Top television stars Nick Cheung and Maggie Cheung Ho Yee play the feuding Love Boat couple, along with a supporting cast of popular artists like Joyce Tang, Ram Chiang, Angela Tong, and Stephen Au. TVB splurges on a big budget to tell a small story, with the drama starting in style on a luxury cruise ship complemented by beautiful ocean scenery and shooting in Hawaii, Los Angeles, and other locales. Nick Cheung and Maggie Cheung display great comedic and romantic chemistry in Ups and Downs in the Sea of Love, and with both stars rarely seen on television in recent years, this heartwarming and entertaining romance is all the more worth revisiting.
Tin Wai San (Nick Cheung) and Fong Ah Man (Maggie Cheung) meet and fall in love on a cruise ship in storybook manner. After just seven days of hand holding, they jump straight to the altar for marital vows, but they get divorced almost as quickly. Hoping to squirm out of alimony, San encourages his friend Wah (Stephen Au) to pursue Man, figuring that if they get married, he can stop paying. When San realizes the truth behind the misunderstanding that ended the marriage, however, he decides he wants his wife back. Love and reconciliation is never straightforward though, especially with San's longtime friend Kar Kar (Joyce Tang) harboring feelings for him and Wah turning out to be a swindling jerk.

VINCENT (CHEUNG KA FAI, NICK) meets ARWEN (CHEUNG HO YEE, MAGGIE) on a cruise trip. Within a week, they develop from stragers to lovers and have an extemporaneous wedding on the ship. However, their impromptu marriage also ends with a misunderstanding.
After divorce, they work at the same travel agent with coincident and become an argumentative couple. VINCENT and his friends, KA (TANG LAI MING, JOYCE) and KEUNG (TSEUNG CHI KWONG, RAM), fight with ARWEN and her boss, LING, constantly. When VINCENT finds out that part of his divorce paper is not completed, he deliberately introduces his old classmate. WAH (AU KAM TONG), the ARWEN, to distract her.
