The worst of human nature is revealed by the lure of power in the 1983 Shaw Brothers period film Usurpers for Emperor's Power. Adapted from a Huang Ying novel, this action-packed wuxia classic details the rough and ruthless competition for the throne in early Song Dynasty. The film is directed by Hua Shan, known for his Jin Yong retellings Little Dragon Maiden and Tales of a Eunuch and wuxia pieces like Soul of the Sword, and stars underrated martial artist Anthony Lau Wing (a.k.a. Tony Liu; Spirit of the Sword, Bloody Parrot). Also featuring heroine Lau Suet Wah (The Lady Assassin), Shaw Bros. regular Lung Tien Hsiang, and a young Max Mok, the film is particularly notable for its action choreography from Yuen Wah, Yuen Bin, and Huang Pei Chi and an impressive fire scene, the scale of which is rarely seen in films of the time.
