YesAsia Editorial Description

From ambitious filmmaker Derek Yee (One Nite in Mongkok) comes Viva Erotica, a surprising, often entertaining ode to Hong Kong's Category III sex films! The late Leslie Cheung (Happy Together, Farewell My Concubine) stars as Sing, an out-of-work director who's given the opportunity to bring one of his scripts to the big screen. One catch: the producer, Chung (Law Kar-Ying, from Chinese Odyssey 1 and 2) has turned Sing's legitimate arthouse concept into a gratuitous Category-III sex-fest! In addition to having his directorial vision compromised, Sing also has to contend with his police officer girlfriend (Karen Mok, from God of Cookery), the triad boss (Paul Chun Pui, from Lost in Time) who's financing the picture, and the peculiar actors cast in this erotic cheese-fest – Mango (Shu Qi, from So Close), lead actress and beautiful mistress to the triad leader, and Wah, a kind-hearted leading man who's a far cry from the pervert he plays in the exploitive movie-within-a-movie! Among all these differing personalities, can Sing find artistic fulfillment while helming what is essentially a soft-core porno?

Despite its Category-III rating, Viva Erotica was a critical hit, earning multiple nominations at the 16th Annual Hong Kong Film Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Leslie Cheung), Best Supporting Actor (Elvis Tsui Kam-Kong), Best Original Music Score, and Best Song. And by the end of the night, Shu Qi walked away with Best Supporting Actress and Best New Artist honors! Featuring a terrific cameo by Lau Ching-Wan, Viva Erotica succeeds not only as a tongue-in-cheek satire of the state of mid-1990s Hong Kong cinema, but also as film that celebrates those who work artistic miracles within commercialized restraints!

Funny and touching film Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
It has been at least ten years since the last time I watched "Viva Erotica" and I had forgotten how enjoyable this film is. For all the film's nudity and naughtiness, its basic message is simple: When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.

Leslie Cheung stars as Sing, a self-serious movie director on a losing streak. His latest arty film script gets purchased, but the producer Chung (Law Kar-Ying) and his unsavory deep-pocketed backer (Paul Chung) want to turn the movie into a cheap soft-core sex comedy. Moreover, the big-bucks backer wants his tarty girlfriend Mango (Shu Qi) to star in the picture.

Despite having the support of his girlfriend Man-Wai (Karen Mok in a seriously bad haircut) for making the movie, Sing is ambivalent about selling out his talent. His ambivalence produces chaos on the film set. Sing's mother intervenes to encourage him to do a good job in making this sex film; she and Sing's late father used to enjoy watching the sex films of great director Li Han-Hsiang. With a fresh perspective on the project, the team pulls together to get the film done. (Unfortunately, we never get much of a feel for the story of the sex film that Sing is making; this is a real missed opportunity that could have been used for exploring any number of interesting themes.)

Leslie Cheung does a fine job of bringing his character's torments to life. Law Kar-Ying is hilarious as the endlessly sycophantic movie producer. Elvis Tsui surprises in a nuanced performance as Wah, the male porn star. And Shu Qi sparkles as Mango, the gorgeous girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is grabbing with all her might for a better life. Mention also must be made of Jingle Ma's cinematography and Kwong Chi-Leung's editing, which make this film a constant visual delight.

With all the film's tawdry trappings, "Viva Erotica" actually has some old-fashioned virtues at its heart, like contrasting the strength Wah draws from his happy married life with the fragility of Sing's shack-up relationship with his girlfriend. I recommend "Viva Erotica" highly for a mature audience.

Viva Erotica Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
A realistic look at idealistic directors who had to compromise their art-house approach/ideals and script as opposed to clueless producers (with a little triad connection) who can make demands to half-kill a script in order to ensure bums on seats only because they're signing the cheques.

Good chemistry between Leslie and Karen Mok (too skinny for my liking) and new comer Shu Qi put in a brave 'front' as she bears all for the sake of the art.
A little too much of topless scenes (to lure more bums on seats? and no wonder she won an award). On the contrary, it was more seductive when Leslie fantasised a naked Shu covered from top to toe with a sheer fabric, leaves more to the imagination. The opening scene of Leslie and Karen making love (where they felt the earth move under their feet as the roof came crashing down with pouring rain) is quite hilarious and certainly put fans in a spin.

Watch this only for its unusual plot and fun content and nothing else.

Unexpectedly good movie Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Even though this movie was rated as "Catalog III" movie, it is an unexpectedly good movie with humor. It brings out the frustration of the Hong Kong movie-makers; the struggle between being idealistic, box office rating, and paying rent. I like it.

Excellent fun ?a must see! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
By all accounts Viva Erotica is a tragically underrated film. Far from being the 'blue movie' you might expect, this is a hilarious, fast paced comedy about the struggle to maintain artistic integrity in the face of rampant commercialisation. It is full to the brim with cringeworthy situations that anybody who has ever had to compromise their ideals will know only too well. Leslie Cheung is fantastic as the down-on-his-luck director who is forced to accept a project he abjectly detests, until what started out as an exercise in humiliation finally turns into a team effort to produce a film that is, if not art, then at least more sophisticated than your average soft porn flick. Towards the end the story runs a little bit out of steam but overall this is an intelligent, well-crafted and thoroughly enjoyable film. Do yourself a favour and buy this gem ?you will not be disappointed!
