The first time I listened to W&Whale's "Hardboiled" album, I must admit that I wasn't much impressed. Most of their songs are built on light, jazzy R&B grooves and the group seemed more enamored with those grooves than with developing memorable melodies. However, with each subsequent hearing, I have been warming up to this album and now can recommend it with real enthusiasm. Track 2, the album's first song, gets the project off to a great start; it is a snappy, jazz-tinged R&B wonder topped by a brassy sound from singer Whale. The album then takes us through a wide range of sounds (mostly, but not always, R&B-based). Whale is a real treat. She can be sassy; she can be sweet. And her phrasing is so strong that her voice drives both melody and rhythm. She also penned the album's finest ballad, the aptly named "Whale Song". The band's playing is crisp, clever, and precise throughout. It may have taken me a while to warm up to this band, but I now am eager to hear what comes next from this talented crew. |

This is a great album! I absolutely love W&Whale's song “R.P.G. (Rocket Punch Generation) and straightaway when I first heard it from the K-movie “Hell Cats” earlier this year. It’s beat rhythm so stays in your head and is one of the best Korean pop songs to date. In fact “R.P.G.” should be a No 1 Korean classic! At the time I saw “Hell Cats” this album wasn’t available and I only had “R.P.G” from the “Hell Cats” OST. But I recently spotted “Hardboiled” in the Korean Yesasia chart and immediately bought it. For one, the album also featured a second version of the “R.P.G” track alongside the main one featured in the HC film. Thankfully, “R.P.G.” isn’t the only one hit wonder from this very varied funky electronic lounge album as “Hardboiled” is just an absolute gem. As far as I can see this is W&Whale’s debut album and a very electric one, too. Sound wise the band are quite reminiscent of fellow stable mates Loveholic in style and this CD features very light and easy listening songs full of pleasant and catchy melodies to sink into. Themes are up tempo and melancholic blends. The song styles range from lounge/rhythmic funk style, funky disco-electronic, touching guitar and piano ballads (“Whale Song” is just brilliant and there’s even a K-drama sad ballad, too, with track 13). Additionally the album features two funky 80s synth and light electronic pop songs (track 8 and 9) when mid way the album gets a bit more synth pop than lounge/funk. But no matter what the style – this album just shines class! Highlighted ditties for me are “R.P.G.” (both versions), “Whale Song”, “Stardust”, “Morning Star”, track 8, “Too Young To Die”, “Dear My Friend”, but this whole album is such a high polished production that all songs are gems. Songs are also interpolated with some interesting sounds /dialogues/ music etc with the “McGuffin” pieces. A very highly recommended CD. Absolutely brilliant! A great band and a quality album to treasure in your collection. Certainly a must for all Loveholic fans. And I’m sure that I’m understating this album, too! |
