One of Kaji Meiko's best performances Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Of the several movies I've seen that have featured actress Kaji Meiko, "Wandering Ginza Butterfly" best gives her a chance to build a complete and interesting character. And Miss Kaji was more than up to the task, as she shines throughout this film, providing beauty, humor, warmth, and grit. Kaji stars as Nami, an ex-con now working as a hostess in a Ginza district nightclub. Her beauty brings the customers in; her toughness and guile ensures that they pay their debts to the club. However, a dark cloud hangs over the club. The nightclub's proprietress owes money to the cruel Owada gang and the Owada gang wants to expand its turf by taking over the club. A bet is made and a game of billiards will decide the club's fate. Only Nami has the skill and moxie to set things right.

"Wandering Ginza Butterfly" is unusual for a yakuza genre film in that it provides plenty of time to develop a real depth to the central characters and to offer interesting interplay among them. For the most part, the film puts violence on the backburner until it explodes in an orgy of blood at the film's end. The bloody ending is preceded by a neat tribute to Kaji's "Lady Snowblood" films when we see her walking in the rain holding an umbrella and dressed in a gorgeous kimono. The film's soundtrack music also offers three opportunities to hear Miss Kaji's lovely singing.

While the movie's production values were cheap -- evidenced by rudimentary set decoration and stark lighting -- this is the rare gangster flick with real heart and humor. I truly enjoyed it and recommend it highly.
