Yuta Hanabusa runs an auto repair shop in a section of Tokyo beside the Sumida River. His daughter Yukari has an uncommon interest in what happened to her aunt, Sakiko, during World War II, but her father tends to avoid the topic. At last Yuta begins to unfold to his daughter what befell her aunt during the war. In the terror of the March 10, 1945 air raid, when America's B-29s rained death upon Tokyo as a preface to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Sakiko lost her little girl. For all of forty-five years Sakiko has been waiting for her child to return, frequently standing near the telephone pole which survived the holocaust, the last place she saw the girl. After Sakiko passed away, a Japanese woman with a Korean name of Lee Soon-ik, comes back from Korea to look for her long lost mother. Yukari wonders if she is her aunt's daughter who had long been missing...

Creatively told war story
|
"War and Youth" is about a high school girl doing her homework. That doesn't sound very interesting? Don't let me mislead you. This is a very good, very powerful, and fascinating film. On the last day of the 1995 school year, a Tokyo high school class is given a summer vacation homework assignment. They must write a 10-page paper on how the Second World War affected their family. We follow one young student as she seeks to interview her father and his brain-addled sister about their experience of the war. What she encounters, through a series of vivid flashbacks of the fire-bombing of Tokyo, is a romantic, mysterious, and horrific story about a cousin she never knew she had. While it describes the civilian deaths in the bombing of Tokyo as "murders", it is to the credit of this fine film that it acknowledges frankly the brutal conduct of Japan in China and elsewhere. However, by telling its story through the bright young eyes of this fresh-faced high school girl, the film never feels heavy-handed or oppressive. I recommend this film very highly for a general audience. |
