Director, producer, and screenwriter Wai Ka Fai is now well known for his collaborations with Johnnie To such as Needing You, Running on Karma, and Fulltime Killer, but like many of Hong Kong's great filmmakers, he first paid his dues in television. From the 1980s to the early 90s, Wai wrote and produced numerous classic TVB dramas like Duke of Mountain Deer, Police Cadet, Looking Back in Anger, and 1986's War of the Dragon. Featuring some of the biggest stars of the time, War of the Dragon is a stirring tale of bloodshed and brotherhood in the triad underworld.

Acclaimed actor Simon Yam, another famous name who got his start in television, plays a small-time gangster who goes to prison for his friend (Leung Ka Yan), only to discover upon release that his girlfriend has become his friend's wife. He tries to start anew, but gets inexorably pulled back into the fatalistic cycle of disputes and deception in the triad world. Co-starring top television actors Canti Lau and Deric Wan and popular actresses Yammie Nam and Mini Kung, War of the Dragon is a triad classic in its own right.

高家寶(任達華)年少無知，跟隨黑道老大李坤(梁家仁)四出生事，但因一次意外誤殺警員，在監獄內渡過人生的黃金時間。出獄後，寶感前路茫茫，而前女友王佩佩(龔慈恩)已與坤結成夫婦，幸得其兄高家傑(張翼)打本給他經營唱片店，因此常遭兄嫂方綺媚(劉雅麗)白眼。

寶本想重新做人，卻因營救黑道舊友王世亮(劉錫明)後無奈地再次踏足江湖。警方臥底江明(溫兆倫)及張景圖(黃秋生)，為監視黑社會活動成為寶的手下，明與寶更多次出生入死。寶與明卻同時愛上了姚淑貞(藍潔瑛)，坤亦趁機陷害，令寶再度入獄。出獄後，寶能否重歸正途？與貞再續情緣呢？

KO KA-PO (Simon Yam) has joined the Triads and served as the assistant to the gang leader LEE KWAN (Leung Ka Yan) since he was a teenager. He is sentenced to imprisonment following his conviction for the murder of a police officer and has spent his best years in jail. On his release from prison, PO begins to worry about his future, and is thrown into greater perplexity when he knows that his ex-girlfriend WONG PUI-PUI (Mini Kung) is already married to KWAN. But luckily, with the support of his elder brother KO KA-KIT (Cheung Yik), PO finally manages to set up his own record store. Despite the close relationship between him and KIT, PO has been looked down upon by his sister-in-law FONG YEE-MEI (Lau Nga Lai).

PO wishes for a new life but in an attempt to rescue a gang member WONG SAI-LEUNG (Lau Sek Ming), he has no choice to get back involved in gang activity. Undercover police officers KONG MING (Wan Siu Lun) and CHEUNG KING-TO (Anthony Wong) have managed to infiltrate the gang as PO's assistants. MING and PO have been through a lot together and are both in love with a girl, YIU SHUK-CHING (Lam Kit Ying). Unfortunately, PO is put in jail again after being framed by KWAN. Will PO turn back on the right path after his release? Will he be able to rekindle his romance with CHING?
