YesAsia Editorial Description

For an artist who has already achieved as much as Liza Wang, it's no longer realistic to expect breakthroughs and surprises, and yet that's exactly what she pulled off in 2005 with the popular period drama Wars of In-Laws. Shedding her perfect composure and graceful image, the veteran actress elicited laughter and applause with a comical performance as a shrill and demanding mother-in-law. Matching pace with Wang is starlet Myolie Wu, who gives a characteristically spunky performance as the bumbling daughter-in-law. Wars of In-Laws was a big hit with both audiences and critics, pulling in top viewership ratings and bagging the Best Drama award at the 2005 TVB Anniversary Awards. Wang was honored with her second Best Leading Actress trophy for her performance, and hapless son/husband Bosco Wong won the Most Improved Artist award. Wars of In-Laws was such a big success, the cast returned for a modern-day sequel of the drama in 2008.

Princess Seuk Lan (Liza Wang) has been spoiled her entire life. For over forty years, she has always had her way, and she expects only the best from everything and everyone around her. When it comes time for her son Mao Chun (Bosco Wong) to get married, naturally Seuk Lan can accept only the best daughter-in-law there is, even if she has to employ some underhanded tricks to steal the candidate from another family. A turn of fate and some mistaken identity, however, brings bandit's daughter Tian Lik (Myolie Wu) into her household. Seuk Lan has endless complaints about this unsatisfactory daughter-in-law, but Tian Lik isn't about to back down so easily either. A war is brewing in the manor, and Mao Chun is stuck in the middle.

Hei Tap La Seuk Lan (Wang Ming Chun, Liza) was born into royalty. Being a princess, she has had the privilege of being tyrannical and unreasonable for more than 40 years. Her son Nig Mau Chun (Wong Chung Chak, Bosco) reaches the age of marriage. She kidnaps the best girl she can find in the capital for him. Unfortunately, Chun eventually gets married to a mountain tyrant's daughter Yin Lik (Wu, Myole).

Lan constantly tries to pick bones with Lik. However, Lik is not exactly gentle and obedient. They are reluctant to adjust to each other. Chun, who is weak and indecisive, is caught in the middle.

Everything is just pretence. Chun is in reality very good at martial arts. He keeps his prowess a secret for an important mission.

Fantastic Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is the first historical series I've watched and I loved it. The characters were hilarious and the series well written and I was really sorry when it was over. I had genuine affection for the characters by the end of it and was really happy to see a satisfying wrap-up for the whole story. Fabulous. If you enjoy films like 'All's Well End's Well' I think you would like this.
