Make way for the synchronized swimmers in the crowd-pleasing zero-to-hero youth film Water
Boys! Directed by Yaguchi Shinobu (Swing Girls), this hilarious and heartwarming 2001 sports comedy about a bunch of high school boys who take up synchronized swimming received eight nominations at the Japan Academy Awards and won a Best Newcomer trophy for heartthrob Tsumabuki Satoshi (Nada Sou Sou). Water Boys not only launched Tsumabuki Satoshi to fame, it also provided a start for many other newcomer actors, most notably Hiroshi Tamaki (Nodame Cantabile, Midnight Eagle). The great success and popularity of Water Boys also inspired a spin-off television drama that eventually ran for three seasons and launched even more careers.
Swimming team member Suzuki (Tsumabuki Satoshi) has a problem: he's the only person on the team. Team membership skyrockets when the school gets a hot new coach, but it turns out she actually teaches synchronized swimming! Persuaded by her beauty, the guys clumsily give the unmanly sport a try, but she soon bails out for maternity leave. Refusing to give up, Suzuki and his remaining four teammates - Sato (Tamaki Hiroshi), Ohta (Miura Akifumi), Kanazawa (Kondo Koen, Ping Pong), and Saotome (Kaneko Takatoshi, Azumi) - enlist a wacky dolphin trainer (Takenaka Naoto, Nodame Cantabile) to be their new teacher!

It's springtime in Japan and the Tadano High School swimming team is barely keeping afloat. When a pretty new coach turns up with the nutty idea of creating a top synchronized swimming team of her own, she has a few problems to overcome. First, she's teaching at an all-boys school; second, the 5 boys who have committed to the team are all hopelessly bad swimmers; third, she suddenly discovers she's 8 months pregnant and due for maternity leave.
Inspired by their darling coach's dream, the boys bumble through the spring and summer, preparing a routine for Tadano High's festival. They face great adversity: the derision of their fellow students, a swimming pool full of dead fish, the mounting pressures of college entrance exams, and worst of all, their own dismal record if constant failure. Their only encouragement comes from a gaggle of local drag queens and the crazy owner of an aquarium, whose idea of training them, is making them polish fish tanks round-the clock.
When autumn finally rolls around, the boys have not only miraculously perfected a truly unique routine, they've won the respect and participation of a whole crew of new teammates. On the eve of the festival, the performance is threatened by one last catastrophe. Will the Waterboys hard work be wasted, or can they paddle their way to the success and recognition they've worked so hard to win?

Ninety-one minutes of wet Japanese boys: I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. For those that need further convincing, Waterboys is also piss-funny. It's a simple story, about a boys' high school swim team. Team membership goes from one to fifty when the boys find their new coach is a girl, then back to five when she wants them to do synchronized swimming. Bummer. They'll be called nancies if they succeed, and losers if they don't. If you've ever tried to stay afloat with one leg in the air, you'll know how difficult synchro is. If you haven't, I suggest you try. Then you'll appreciate these boys in their quest, a quest which includes fish-flinging, dolphin fun, a transvestite geisha club, a flaming afro, and of course the main goal of teenage boys: teenage girls. Not all the boys are girl-mad, though: one is a maths geek, another strips down to a g-string to build up some muscle, while a third harbours a secret passion for another. This film is light years ahead of the average teen comedy. There's no moral lessons, no bad guys who get humiliated, and no parents: just five Japanese boys, some fish, some dolphins, and lots of water. 8 very tight speedos out of 10 by Alison Jobling - heroic-cinema.com |

Great Movie
| The movie is very funny and based on a true story (which happened back in 1986). The end performance is very well done. We got the Hong Kong version, as those are way cheaper and have English subtitles. |

Fun family fare

"WaterBoys" is a sweet-natured, enjoyable comedy about a group of high school boys who join together to form a synchronized swimming team that will perform at their school's annual festival. The film is slow to get off the ground, with the opening 20 minutes featuring too much low comedy of pratfalls and slapstick. However, once the boys begin their practices, "WaterBoys" begins to take flight. While the film's premise is outlandish, the interactions among the ensemble cast feel genuine and it is the good nature of the kids that pulls the movie together and gets the viewer rooting for them. "WaterBoys" is a lot of fun for the entire family. I highly recommend it. |

it was good
it was good
| i didn't know if i wanted to try this movie because i don't understand Japanese at all. but people keep on telling me that it's good and funny and all. i gave in and watched it and had to keep reading the subtitle. not something i like to do but under the circumstances i had to. it was good. it had its funny moments here and there. the lead actor is very young looks like a high school kid as is who is portraying. the swimming was good. |

This is such an awesome movie! Not only was I nearly in tears from laughter the entire time, but once it was over, I had to fight the urge to watch it several more times. You will not be disappointed by this movie, at all, it's a must see! |
