Ballad diva par excellence WAX is back in town.
Even busier than before, the chanteuse went one step ahead this year to try her luck in the J-music scene, which resulted in her first Japanese single "Red Thread" as well as her debut Japanese album in the spring. Her true fans however are no doubt more excited about her latest Korean album Vol. 6, which arrives 21 months after her last full-length release in February 2005.
The principal track on the new album is the ballad "That's What Love Is All About" (Track 1), which talks about the worries and heartaches of women. Another tune filled with a melancholic atmosphere is "Mokposi - Pale Cave" (Track 9), which revolves around a failed teen romance. "Young Bird" (Track 8) is accompanied by bossa nova rhythms and reflects on the relaxed and liberal years of childhood, while "Looking for Someone" (Track 6) is about an attempt to apologize to one's true love. Also including "Love, Wine and Songs" (Track 4), which comes with a touch of reggae, WAX's new album is ready to charm fans with more of her trademark easy listening songs.

갑자기 쌀쌀해진 날씨가 장롱 속의 두꺼운 옷들을 꺼내게 만들고 ‘어디에서는 첫서리가 내렸다’는 뉴스가 가을의 소리를 타고 들려온다 작년 2월 초에 5집 앨범이 나왔으니 꼭 21개월만, 데뷔 후 가장 길었던 이번의 공백은 일본에서의 활동 때문. 이 기간 동안 싱글 1장과 앨범 1장을 내며 일본땅에 왁스라는 이름을 확실하게 아로새기고 돌아왔다. 이번 6집 앨범은 왁스 음악의 진수만을 보여줄 수 있는 곡으로 이른바 ‘왁스표’라고 불리는 주옥 같은 발라드가 주를 이루고 있다.
이번 앨범 타이틀 곡인 ‘사랑이 다 그런거니까’는 이 가을에 더 많은 이들의 가슴을 아리게 할 것만 같다.
힘겹게 사랑을 끝냈지만 이별의 아픔은 더욱 커져만 간다. 이렇게 괴로울 거라면 왜 사랑했고 왜 이별 했을까. 사랑도 이별도 모두 바보짓처럼 느껴진다 이토록 질긴 인연이 원망스럽다. 하지만, 체념한다. ‘사랑이 다 그런거니까’ 어쩌면 우리의 인생 자체가 다 그런 것이다..
그외 수록곡을 보면 백 원짜리 동전 하나면 하늘을 나는 듯 순수했던, 그래서 아픈 사랑에서 자유로웠던 어린 시절을 보사노바 리듬에 담은 (‘파랑새’), 유년시절을 노래한다면 시골에서 갓 올라와 낯 설은 서울 풍경에 좌절하던 청년 시절을 노래한 (‘목포시 청담동’), 이제 사랑이 시작될 것만 같은 초입에서 불안한 마음에, 아직 사랑을 모르던 그 옛날을 회상하며 그리워하는 (‘그땐 그랬어’), 함께했던 많은 시간들을 접어둔 채로 막 떠나려는 사랑이 있다. 그토록 정성스레 나를 지켜주던 사람이 미안하단 말과 함께 떠나려 한다.(‘사람을 찾습니다’)
조금씩 없어지는 지폐 대신, 영원할거라 믿었기 때문에 지갑 가득히 꽂아 두었던 사진들. 오늘도 지갑이 주는 두툼한 촉감은 당신의 빈자리를 많이 그리워하게 한다.(‘두툼한 지갑’), 사랑을 하던 순간엔 차마 묻지 못했던 말들을. 난 그때 어땠었는지, 정말 예뻤었는지, 나 때문에 행복했는지를.(‘물어봅니다’), 우린 나약한 존재이므로 떠난 사람이 마냥 행복해지길 바랄 순 없는 법. 왜냐하면 그 사람이 행복해질수록 내가 더욱 초라해질 테니까.(‘엽기적인 그녀’), 하지만 사랑의 그림자는 어느곳에나 있다. 그래서 이별이 더 힘든 것이지만. 적막한 거리를 걷다가도 그냥 말없이 멈춰서 사랑을 불러본다(‘어두운 거리에 머무른 사랑’). 술 한잔에 이별을 고한 이에게 크게 외쳐보고 술 한잔에 이별로 슬퍼하는 나를 달래어본다. 레게 리듬에 실린 아이러니한 가사가 더욱 가슴에 와 닿는 (’愛.酒.歌.’) 등 앨범의 전체가 주옥 같은 발라드로 구성 되어있다.

queen of ballads
| first of all i have to admit that she is my favourite korean female singer,she has a really beautiful and moving voice,for some people lee soo young is the queen of ballads,well well..just buy this cd and you will know who is the real queen in korea..seriously you can buy this cd your eyes closed you will not regret,the perfect album to descover this beautiful sophisticated and melankolic voice from this beautiful women...enjoy. |

2 words: Classic Wax

This CD embodies her entire ballad career. The CD came out at EXACTLY the right time of year with most of the ballads having that perfect winter/holiday feel like Track 5....just reminds me of strolling the streets with snow blanketed on the ground...such a beautiful song and ONLY Wax could pull something like that off. Track 1, her first single also has a very wintery ballad feel to it...perfect release time. The most upbeat songs on the CD are tracks 4 and track 9. Track 9 is my favorite song on the CD...just an excellent beat, great vocals, and a really good feel. Many of the songs have the same type of feel like track 1, 3, and 10 all with light piano beats but overall beautiful songs. Track 3 has a nice little guitar riff...nice song but not one of my favorites. Track 8 is REALLY interesting...another one of my favorites. It starts off like it is going to be a fast dance track and then turns into this sultry song with a jazzy tempo and interesting sounds of the harmonica and sythesizer. Overall for only having 10 tracks this is a really solid ballad CD for Wax proving she can easily hold ranks with that of Lee Soo Young and other ballad stars. Pros: Excellent ballads with that perfect Wax style. Cons: Almost entirely ballads with very little upbeat dance tracks. |
