One of my all time favourites. Watched it over 10 times all these years, still enjoy it when there is garbage on tv. I would say this is the best work of the Mitani so far, all others after this one were like Ocean Twelve - just lots of stars, not funny at all, waste of time & $. Own the vcd version, would love to buy the dvd with Tradition Chinese subs, but not available, sad. Another one I highly recommend is Messenger by Iijima Naoko 飯島直子 and Kusanagi Tsuyoshi 草薙剛. Sadly that one I also only have vcd version... |

"Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald" is a brilliant screwball comedy about a radio play gone seriously awry. Novice scriptwriter Suzuki Miyako (perfectly played by Suzuki Kyoka) is thrilled that she has won a scriptwriting contest and will have her script performed on air. (She is a bit deflated when she learns that no one else bothered to enter the contest.) Her script tells a melodramatic tale of a pachinko parlor worker, married to an unsuccessful used-car salesman, who falls in love with a fisherman who saves her from drowning. But the script must be changed when the prima donna actress hired to play the lead begins making demands. She wants her character's name to be "Mary Jane" and wants her to have a more glamorous career ... say, a trial lawyer. Soon the other actors are making demands (the fisherman morphs into an astronaut named Donald McDonald), the script is being reworked and rewritten on the fly, and the end result is hilarious, nonsensical chaos, with poor Suzuki Miyako in agony as she sees her story torn to shreds. It is amazing to consider that this film was the first directorial effort by Mitani Koki (who also wrote the script); his control over this comedic maelstrom is masterly. Apart from the marvelous comic timing, what makes this film so special is that it touches the basic human yearnings and foibles within us all. I recommend "Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald" very highly. I also recommend director Mitani's most recent film, "Uchuoten Hotel" (also available from YesAsia), an equally charming, equally fast-paced comedy. |

Hilarious and Clever

This film was based on a play both written and directed by Koki Mitani. It was a wonderful satire that was beautifully acted by an outstanding ensemble cast. You would laugh it out very laudly. Too bad as always in most of Asian cinema or series, the end interview or special features are without subtitles. |

HILARIOUS!!!
| This is an entertaining and charming comedy about the screw-ups during a live radio drama episode ¡V very funning and heart warming and somewhat of a culture glimpse into Japanese fad with radio dramas and TV games shows. |
