A triumph on every level, this electrifying musical sets the ageless tragedy of Romeo and Juliet against a backdrop of gang warfare in the slums of 1950's New York. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, and scripted by Ernest Lehman, the film combines the unforgettable score ("Maria", "Somewhere", "Tonight") of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim with Robbins' own exuberant choreography to capture a story that garnered a total of ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture. As star-crossed as the ancient fable, a lovers affair is fated for tragedy amidst the vicious rivalry of two street gangs - the Jets and the Sharks - one Anglo, one Puerto Rican. When Jet member Tony (Richard Beymer, "Twin Peaks") fall for the Shark leader's sister Maria (Natalie Wood), it's more than these two warring gangs can handle. And as Mounting tensions rise, a battle-to-the-death ensues causing innocent blood to be heart-breakingly shed.

Once upon a fine after-school day, I came across West Side Story. This musical was co-directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and points out some important racial and social class issues.
West Side Story opens with the cool whistle of the Jets, one of the film's central gangs, slowly zooming in on the district and some of the film's other major characters. Caught in the middle of the tale is the romance of Maria (Natalie Wood) and Tony (Richard Beymer). Maria is the younger sister of Bernardo (George Chakiris), the head of the Hispanic Sharks, while Tony used to be a member of the local Jets still led by his bosom friend Riff (Russ Tamblyn). As a result, a confrontation between the two opposed gangs seems to be unavoidable. The story shifts with the sound of its songs, introducing the ballad Maria in a dream-like sequence during Maria and Tony's first encounter at the ballroom. I Feel Pretty vibrates with the joy of Maria who is longing for her second rendezvous with Tony, while America comes with a Latin flavor that appropriately underlines the Puerto Rican origin and the feelings and attitudes of the characters. After the reproving A Boy Like That sung by Bernardo's lover Anita (Rita Moreno), the general atmosphere of the film becomes increasingly melancholic. The reprise of the song Somewhere ends the movie on a sad, but hopeful note. Featuring some of the best dance choreography of the last century, this ambitious musical resonates through Leonard Bernstein's memorable sound score and especially its unforgettable songs. |
