Director Negishi Kichitaro has been an established name in Japanese cinema for the past thirty years, with works ranging from classic 80s films Distant Thunder and Story of the Detective to the 1998 crime drama Bonds. Based on a Narumi Sho novel, his acclaimed 2005 film What the Snow Brings, a.k.a. Yuki ni Negau Koto, is a quiet, moving depiction of modern life and family, and the subtle forces that push and pull people together and apart. Set in the snowy beauty of Hokkaido, What the Snow Brings touches on universal themes of family, reconciliation, and returning to nature in a way that feels fresh, humanistic, and affecting. The film features an outstanding cast, with Iseya Yusuke (Memories of Matsuko, Honey & Clover), Sato Koichi (Aegis, A Cheerful Gang Turns the Earth), Koizumi Kyoko (Hanging Garden), and Fukiishi Kazue (Nice no Mori, Memories of Tomorrow).

Manabu (Iseya Yusuke) once had great dreams of storied success and living it large in Tokyo, but the city has treated him cruelly. With nothing left to his name, he dejectedly returns to his native Hokkaido to live with his older brother Takeo (Sato Koichi). For these two vastly different brothers, there is no joyful reunion nor tearful greeting, only years of what was left unsaid, amidst the snow-covered lands of the horseracing stable Takeo tends. As Manabu devotes his time to taking care of a racehorse on the last leg of its life, the brothers slowly come to terms with themselves and each other.

What the Snow Brings garnered much acclaim both domestically and internationally, with Negishi receiving Best Director nods from the Hochi and Mainichi Film Awards. The film also swept the 18th Tokyo International Film Festival, picking up the Grand Prix, the Best Director Award, the Best Leading Actor Award (for Sato Koichi), and the Audience Award.

《向雪許願》本片卡司堅強，由【東京影展最佳男主角】佐藤浩市、《令人討厭的松子的一生》伊勢谷友介及80年代玉女小泉今日子等領銜主演，曾獲東京影展最佳影片、導演、男主角及觀眾票選等四項大獎，在2006年台北電影節中受到許多注目。

《向雪許願》憑藉詩意的悠揚凝練筆調，追憶逐漸逝去的寶貴文化傳統，同時又以內斂飽滿的情感，細膩捕捉人與人、人與馬間的微妙互動，編織一則感動人心的故事。全片將劇情、人物與紀錄輓馬傳統的文化目的完美揉合，在劇情之中可習得輓馬之美，在輓馬競賽之中又可窺見人性互動間的生命真諦，帶給我們的是一些反省，以及早已經跟我們久違了的感動。

本片改編自鳴海章的小說《輓馬》，輓馬是北海道一種傳統賽馬，比的不只是速度，還有耐力和馱力。故事描述在東京失去一切的年輕人，回到北海道帶廣老家，跟著哥哥馴養輓馬，從中尋得再起勇氣的故事。
