YesAsia Editorial Description

At 1994's Hong Kong Film Awards, Anita Yuen took home the Best Actress statuette for He's A Woman She's A Man. In the same year, she also made Whatever You Want, a hilarious comedy that brings the viewers into the world of fantasy. Directed by Wong Jing, the film features Michael Wong as a wacky god, Jordan Chan (Initial D), and Christy Chung (Jan Dara). Parodies of famous films offer more amusing scenarios on top of those created by the incapable god and our clumsy young protagonist.

Timid girl Ping (Anita Yuen) changes job frequently as she is always being bullied at work. Her father finds her a position in his own advertising firm, but he forbids her from revealing her real identity to her colleagues, especially to her half-sister (Christy Chung) who is a manager in the company. Ping is assigned to find fake pearls as props for shooting TV commercials, but she accidentally calls out the sloppy "Pearl God" (Michael Wong) from one of her pearls. Her adventure may be regarded as the comedic Chinese version of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp!

Renowned writer/director/actor/producer Wong Jing created this charming fantasy comedy, featuring a top notch cast. The sweet, lovable Anita Yuan Yung-yi (who became an overnight sensation in He's A Woman, She's A Man) stars as an illegitimate daughter who inadvertently finds a pearl with a genie in it. Michael Wong (The Final Option) is the genie who gives her three wishes, which leads to a lot of hilarity and even a little heartbreak.

Wong Jing wins this time
Whatever You Want may be the most forgotten film in the IVL/Shaw Brothers collection - and it could deserve that classification. This pastiche of movie parodies, dumb comedy, and general silliness is far from a quality motion picture experience, and should come with writer-director Wong Jing's official seal of mediocrity embossed in the DVD cover. However, the above criticism only exists if we expect all our moviegoing choices to be official award-winning cinema - in which case stuff like Scary Movie or Airplane! would never make our viewing list. Let's face it: cheap, disposable silliness has its place. If that's the case, then Whatever You Want should be the pick for longtime Hong Kong Cinema junkies.

Here's why: it's got a performance from the long-missed and ever-adorable Anita Yuen, who back then (1994) was at the height of her popularity and girlish charm. Yuen manages to inject some actual emotion into her portrayal of Ping, a sweet, silly girl who discovers a magical genie (Michael Wong in a hilarious bit of casting) and requests that he use his powers to make life better for her half-sister Pearl (Christy Chung). Pearl falls for the genie, but Ping does too, leading to expected romantic longings that are more false than actually touching. However, Whatever You Want is also home to some of the funniest Wong Kar Wai parodies ever, including a classic bit where the director's stand-in (called "Wong Jing Wai") gets beaten up at a screening of an obvious Ashes of Time parody - which features Law Kar-Ying in all the roles!

Law also appears in the film in parodies of the classic drama Shanghai Beach, Wong Kar Wai's Chungking Express, and even the Keanu Reeves blockbuster Speed, the top-grossing film in Hong Kong in 1994 and the first non-local production to achieve that distinction in a good long while. Nowadays, Hollywood product routinely destroys Hong Kong movies at the Hong Kong box office, making the above bit of trivia more interesting than it probably really is. What does this have to do with Whatever You Want? Probably nothing, except once again demonstrate that everything is better when viewed in the rear-view mirror. At the time of its release, Whatever You Want was disposable movie junk. In hindsight, it's still disposable movie junk. But hey, it's also not that bad. Hindsight can be king.

Wong Jing keeps the laughs coming Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Whatever You Want" is the kind of movie in which the jokes come at you in a very silly torrent and, while many of them fall flat (or escape the viewer not intimately familiar with Hong Kong culture), the number of jokes that work is more than enough to keep you in stitches. Anita Yuen shines as Ping, the daughter of the neglected eighth wife of a Hong Kong tycoon. Ping hops from job to job, always being bullied by her colleagues. Finally, her father hires her to work for his advertising company, now run by his favored daughter, Pearl (Christy Chung), but Ping is forbidden to reveal the family connection. Asked to find pearls for use in an ad, Ping finds magic pearls, out of which emerges a hunky genie (Michael Wong). Romantic complications -- and lots of laughs -- ensue.

"Anything You Want" is bolstered with hilarious references to other movies (often featuring the terminally-goofy Law Kar-Ying) and a consistently funny supporting role by Jordan Chan as Ping's exceedingly horny, but unhygienic, work-mate. Amidst all the craziness, this movie belongs to Anita Yuen, whose spunky performance raises "Anything You Want" to another level. Perhaps director Wong Jing should cast her in all his movies. "Anything You Want" definitely is worth a look.

This movie is hilarious! It was a hit when it first came out in the cinema. All my friends loved it and recommended to me. Michael was funny, Anita was cute. Both of them really made a great team in this movie. Too bad now it's not being published anymore...
