Eason Chan's recording career thus far has three stages: his career under Capital Artist, where he developed his voice and style; his career under EEG, where he developed his commercial prospects; and now, his career under Cinepoly/Universal, where he is comfortably finding a balance between his art and his popularity. His first album with Cinepoly, U87, was a thrilling comeback, an album with some familiar sounds and some new ones as well. Regardless of quality, people were just glad that Eason was back in a big way, sweeping the Hong Kong music awards. In his second Cantonese release, Life Continues, Eason shows off his funky side with a short 7-track EP whose most eye-catching aspect is the reunion of Eric Kwok and Jerald Chan (formerly known as pop group Swing) as producers. With Eason acting as co-producer, his third and latest Cantonese album What's Going On? (a title that may be referring to Eason's hairstyle on the cover) shows Eason beginning to settle comfortably into Cinepoly as no longer just another karaoke-friendly pop star, but a true artist.
Originally intended as a Mandarin album, Eason frankly admitted in the making-of video that What's Going On? was produced so he could be a contender in the year-end awards (the Mandarin version, with presumably the same tracks, will be released in April). But rest assured that What's Going On? is still a non-commercial album released for a commercial purpose. Starting off the album is first single Don't We All Love Dresses (credit to Eason and Co. for including English titles for each song in the booklet), a sexy midbeat electronic rock track that even Eason admits might have been something that the late Leslie Cheung or Anita Mui would have mastered easily. While the arrangement and writing all come together nicely, Eason's vocals are far too rough to deliver the class and glamour the great Leslie would have brought to the game. Nevertheless, it's a nice start to the album, and Eason will have plenty of other chances to show off his versatile vocals. Reuniting with Eason for the first time since Live For Today (where he produced the two part pop epic Lies and Truth), Hong Kong's most prominent rock producer Kubert Leung returns with a pair of distinctly different tracks: The Last Hippie (Track 2) and White Rose (Track 3). Instead of delivering a 70s hip rock in the veins of Love Psychedelico, The Last Hippie is a playful noisy rock track in the vein of an American top-40 pop-rock hybrid that is perhaps a little too noisy and too playful. On the other hand, White Rose is a beautifully composed and elegantly written track about an unattainable love that is the farthest place one can go after The Last Hippie, and a far better place it is. From there, What's Going On? goes right into a spectacular middle section starting with Reaper Will Find You (Track 4), a dark meditation on the grim reaper (even with a reference to the hit Japanese comic/film Death Note), and it directly connects to Sorrow is Meaningless (Track 5), a melancholy ballad about love and loss that is the closest thing to a karaoke-friendly track on this album. The mid-section ends with Better Not to Meet (Track 6), the barest track of the album in terms of both arrangement and theme. It also happens to be the best track of the album, with a nostalgia-evoking arrangement that makes the track appear to have come straight out of a set of commercials for wristwatches from the early 90s. The three-act section, tied by the common themes of loss and regret, is arguably the best thing Eason has done since his Capital Artist days with its cinematic structure, Eason's versatile vocals, and poetic lyrics. However, at the end of the day, the order of the day is rock, and the last stretch of What's Going On? packs plenty of it. Done entirely by C.Y. Kong (who also had a considerable presence on U87), ex-LMF member Davy Chan, and Eason himself, these last four tracks resemble the light rock style that Eason used for 2003's Live for Today. While they are just as serviceable as anything else on the album, this last section never hits a peak (not that it ever gets boring either), and What's Going On? merely limps back to home base with closing track Cantonese Old Movie. Despite its lackluster ending, What's Going On? is still a thematically complex album that takes a bit of time to absorb - the lyrics by eight different lyricists are considerably harder to crack, and the abundance of rock may turn off fans that prefer the "EEG Eason", but once What's Going On? gets into your head, it stays there for a very long time. Sooner or later, it might even become just as addictive as any other Eason album, and there's certainly nothing wrong with that. by Kevin Ma |

Best of The Best
| This album is worthy to take times to enjoy it. Actually it is the best of the best from Eason Chan. It is better than U87 and Life Continues. Eason style is solid to perform in this album and all songs are durable than his karaoke style in EEG. It is hard to find such good quality in Hong Kong pop music. Honestly Eason improves a lot in his music for last couple of years. |

Again????

1st edition came out in 11/06. Now this 2nd edition in 01/07. Should I save my money now for the future 3rd, 4th, and N'th editions of the basically the same CD? I agree with one of the reviewers that the sound quality is not very good. You can tell easily if you have a better stereo with a subwoofer. I used the same equipments to listen to some Eason's old CDs from Capital Artists; the sound quality appeared to be much better. Even CDs of EEG. I am not sure what Universal does with his recordings... The 5-star rating again is for the Company, Universal. However, still 10-stars for Eason and his singing. |

Not his best work,but decent.
|
After listening through the whole album once, I decided that there were only 2 songs that caught my attention : tracks 3 & 5. I found track 3 interesting because it sounded very classy. Track 5 is simply beautiful and is obviously of the hit-song type. All the other tracks required more time to get into, with tracks 2, 4 , 6 and 10 slowly getting my recognition. I feel that track 1 is slightly overrated, however. The popularity of the song owes much to the tv series it was made theme-song to. Overall, this album is obviously not his best work. However, there are a few good songs here, as mentioned above, that makes this album worth seeking-out. |

I wasn't disappointed with eason's new ablum. I think the songs are really great and it fits into the theme of the album. I also like the mixture of music there is in this album to keep listeners interested. For example there is cantonese pop and a bit of rock to follow a sad song. the title, "what's going on..." is catchy and simple, but yet it relates well with his songs. |

Bad Recording
| Songs are good. Recording quality is quite bad. The packaging is nice, but it is very hard to get the CD out. The box is not easy to open, next you need to take out the DVD envelop, then the booklet before you reach the CD. This is not contributing to my final rating :) Songs alone is worth 8/10. Recording drags it down to 7/10. |
