YesAsia Editorial Description
Based on a Hiiragi Aoi teen girl comic discovered by Miyazaki Hayao during his summer vacation, Whisper of the Heart was the first Studio Ghibli theatrical feature film that isn't directed by studio co-founders Miyazaki or Takahata Isao. In a move to train a new generation of younger directors, Miyazaki's script was instead handed over to Kondo Yoshifumi, who unfortunately passed away in 1997 with Whisper as his only directorial effort. A low-key drama with a sweet youth romance at its core, Whisper of the Heart transcended a typical children's animated film with relatively more mature themes such as career ambitions and teenage life, making it appealing to viewers of all ages. The fantasy sequences in the film, based on the protagonist's novel and starring a cat named The Baron, even became so popular with audiences that Studio Ghibli later brought back the character with The Cat Returns.
One day, junior high school student Shizuku left a book that includes her composition for a graduation song in school. When she returns to retrieve the book, she finds that a boy has picked it up and read it. He automatically becomes her enemy when he makes fun of the lyrics as "corny". Later, Shizuku discovers that the boy is Amasawa Seiji, the mysterious person whom Shizuku noticed had checked out every single book in the library. The two later become friends and come to develop feelings for each other. However, when Seiji decides to go abroad to study for a career as a luthier, Shizuku begins to grow worried about her own future. As a result, Shizuku begins working on a book based on a cat at the local antique shop as the first step in beginning her own career.

It's such a cute story about the pure innocent love between two children. They meet, have a crush and a dislike for each other. Both have dreams to do what they always wanted and as their love grows, their chances of their dreams expand with them... It's a cute cute story that I've watched three times. |

Yes, I tottaly agree it is a very sweet and touching movie, a bit slow but sertainly worth watching. But what others seem to forget is that this movie is part one of "the cat returns". Altough its not really important to see both as part one and two, its funny to know and I kinda like to know this kind of facts... |

I 'DEEPLY' Love this cartoon, the way it fulfill me,touching my soul (and my deeply-hidden-vision of a positive site which looking at nowadays world , people..),the feeling of your first-time crashing by love (even though it's a puppy-love) sorry for my english grammar...but i do love this cartoon so-much!! and i do believe that the promise which a violin maker boy (Seiji) gave to Shizuku (a young writer girl) will last forever . |

How can I put into words the emotions I'm feeling right after watching this movie? There are some books that will change your outlook on life, and some movies will do the same. This is one of them. Director Kondo's work is one of those movies that you will remember ten years from now, especially if you watch it with your significant other. The movie is targetted towards teenagers and adults. The plot consists of a 15-year old girl's journey into love and discovering herself. Yes, I know that it doesn't sound like much, but if you're a romantic at heart, this movie will touch you in a very special way. There are many subplots and themes that are too complex and too enjoyable for me to list here. I didn't know I was a romantic until I watched this movie. However, if you're looking for action/violence/sex then this movie might not be for you. But I still urge you to watch it. It will change the way you look at the smaller things of life, and the way you love others. It will be very nostalgic of your first love, and how innocent, pure and full it was. It will inspire you to pursue your goals and not to be shy to those you love. You know that girl you really like in English class but don't have the guts to tell her? This movie tells you to announce your feelings. Nothing bad can come out of loving someone. Most probably, you will have shed a tear before the movie's end. Go get it and watch it now! You will thank me. |
