The Story takes place in the Wuyi mountains in the South of China. The pretty girl Lotus lost her husband just after they got married. The newly-widowed Lotus faces various difficulties - the sadness for losing her husband, the misunderstanding from her father-in-law, and their dispute in dividing the family properties. Lotus has to bear these all by herself, and supports the family. Her softness and virtuousness wins the love of both the quarry's manager who is powerful and rich, and the bus driver who is kind and honest. Lotus has to choose......

Well-told tale of loss & love

"Who's More Dependable" (a.k.a. "The Story of Lotus") begins with a distant explosion, an explosion at a quarry that kills the husband of Lotus (Bian Xiao Xiao). Lotus is left with an infant son and a father-in-law torn up by the loss of his only son. Soon the beautiful Lotus is pursued by a poor bus driver and the wealthy married owner of the quarry at which her husband was killed. "Who's More Dependable" uses this set-up to explore themes of love, loss, grief, greed, and recovery. The cast delivers uniformly excellent performances and the film is filled with gorgeous cinematography of its rural surroundings. I recommend "Who's More Dependable" very highly. |
