The second film by Korean auteur Kim Ki Duk, the 1996 feature Wild Animals (a.k.a. Wildlife Reservation Zone) sets the stage for what's to come from one of the world's most exciting directors. Set in France where Kim studied art in the early 90s before returning to Korea to pursue filmmaking, Wild Animals revolves around two illegal immigrants' struggle for survival in the streets of Paris. Jang Dong Jik, who also appeared in Birdcage Inn, and Cho Jae Hyun, who starred in most of Kim's early films including Crocodile, Isle, and Bad Guy, play two Korean men from opposite sides of the parallel who end up unlikely partners in crime in France.
Meeting by chance in Paris, South Korean street painter and small-time crook Chong Hae and North Korean army deserter Hong San become dubious friends, mainly because Chong Hae keeps using Hong San for his money-making schemes. They can only rely on each other when they get mixed up with the Parisian underworld and two women who bring much trouble.
