Teapot, Curly, Windpipe, Vaseline, and Ranks are a band of bumbling thieves who try to clean up their act by starting a janitorial service. They run afoul of a pair of gangsters when they find a briefcase containing counterfeit money. Made in response to the popular ACES GO PLACES series, WINNERS AND SINNERS is the opening salvo in a series of seven LUCKY STARS films, though the film is only loosely related to the other six. Directed by Sammo Hung, the film lays down the precedents for the other films: the five Lucky Stars are teamed with one beautiful female (in this case, Cherie Chung) whom they each try to grope and woo; the film then climaxes in a slapstick showdown with cartoonish villains. WINNERS AND SINNERS marks the second time in which Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao--the three "kung-fu-teers"--appear together. Though Chan is not the star, he has an exciting action sequence in which he roller-skates through traffic. Comedic high points include a spirited rendition of Rod Stewart's "Young Turks" and an invisibility gag later mimicked in MYSTERY MEN.

Endearing, Hong Kong-Style Fun

Directed by and starring Sammo Hung, Winners and Sinners (also called Five Lucky Stars) is nonsensical, meandering, and incredibly silly. But it's also a lot of fun. Sammo Hung stars as a member of the Five Star Cleaning company made up of 5 ex-cons just released from prison for various petty crimes. When they accidentally come into possession of counterfeiting plates belonging to big bad triad boss Jack Tar (James Tien), the group must work together amidst constant infighting and bickering to stay alive and outwit the villains. Featuring some cameos from kung fu greats like Yuen Biao (who also did the film's action choreography), Mars, Chi Ling-Chiu, and Lam Ching-Ying, Winners and Sinners is a fast-paced action comedy with just enough plot to keep the film going. Although it doesn't kick in really until about 45 or 50 minutes into the film, there's plenty to keep your interest - from an off-the-wall performance of Rod Stewart's 'Young Hearts Beat Free Tonight', to a hilarious segment where Richard Ng thinks he's invisible, to the film's energetic action design found throughout. Half a star is taken off for John Shum's horrendous overacting, by far the film's weakest point. Also starring Cherrie Chung and Jackie Chan (in a minor role, despite his prominence on the DVD cover), Winners and Sinners is for the HK lover in you. |
