The women-in-prison genre gets another standout Hong Kong entry with the aptly-titled Women Prison! Pat Ha stars as Kelly, who is sent to a women's correctional facility after taking out a loan shark on her wedding day. Thrown into unfamiliar, brutal environs, Kelly finds little to comfort her, as a gang war is brewing, and the wardens and guards are steeped in corruption. But Kelly does find support and even friendship with some of the inmates, including the motherly Kam (Petrina Fung), and tough-as-nails gang leader Lynn (popular comedienne Carol "DoDo" Cheng in an against-type performance). Together, the women find camaraderie and some measure of hope as they brave the daily trials of their prison life.,p>Told in gritty, harrowing, and compelling style by director David Lam, Women Prison is an underrated member of its genre, and can be favorably compared to male-oriented prison films like Ringo Lam's popular Prison on Fire series.
