Wonderful Life: A Surreal Story of the After Life Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
What happens when we finally die? What lies beyond the living world? What if it was a place where you had to pick one memory... one memory to spend all eternity with? What if you couldn't choose?

Wonderful Life, or After Life in North America, is about a group of people that help the dead select one memory to take with them on their final sending... heaven as you can say. The place is an old rundown building in the middle of limbo where all four seasons are experienced on random days and things just seem too surreal. People are assigned to 'counselors' who help the dead for three days on selecting their memory to go to heaven with. Sometimes it is simple, other times it is dreadfully complicated. In the end, a new week begins and a new group of people must be sent off.

Let me say that this movie is not for the average person. The movie is very slow and very long, sometimes you'll probably catch yourself looking at the clock or timer on your DVD player wondering how much more is left in the movie. I don't think that the director, Kore-eda Hirokazu, intentionally directs his movies for the general audience... though they just happen to be released nationwide. I think his movies are fit more for the audience at the Cannes festival than for the average viewer watching Battle Royale at home for the tenth billionth time.

Despite the slow pace and sometimes confusing elements, the movie makes you actually believe that this could actually be real. The movie's style is almost of a documentary and the actors seem very real and very fluent. There's no over acting and everything is very mellow, also I believe that this is factored in with the cinematography and the lack of a music score. Each person has their own separate personality, from the one woman that talked about each man she has slept with to the little girl that tried to decide whether she wanted to remember Disneyland or her laying down on her mother's lap.

The story line is very bland, though it picks up at the last 30 minutes or so of the movie. The bulk of it is just people telling about their lives on Earth and then them contemplating on which ones to choose. There are some minor storylines behind the main characters of the movie, the counselors, but it lacks heavily in that department. The only part of storyline that is actually predominant is between Shiroi (Erika Oda) and Mochizuki (ARATA), and that's, like I said, at the last 30 minutes or so of the movie, which explains why Mochizuki was paying so much attention to one of his clients.

Wonderful Life is an excellent movie, no doubt, but for some people it just lacks that thing they need to make it one of their favorites. If you're into slow, melancholic, noir movies... then Wonderful Life is defiantly for you, if not, then don't bother.

Wonderful Life is available in North America under the title After Life.

BEST! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is the best movie I have ever seen. The story is a collaboration of ideas about what it'll be like after death. The idea is very fresh and the movie gives lots of room for the audience's imagination and interpretation. It is not recommended for people that likes commercial films though, since this movie is filmed like a documentary. But after watching this movie, i fell in love with the style of Hirokazu Koreeda. I hope you'll do too!
