Making little to no public appearances and keeping those appearances she DID have to a very limited elite crowd. At her opening red carpet gala event many larger publications were given an all access pass to the event but they in turn thanked her with barely a blurb when it came to print.
Utada fans have something to realize about why she did not do well in the United States market. She's a niche singer who hails from a Jpop background with her high pitched warbling "on the verge of crying" vocals and somewhat limited vocal range and appeal. There is absolutely no way she can succeed in America if she presents herself as "Jpop Diva" rather than "Jpop to the Masses."
