After working closely for A Better Tomorrow III, Once Upon a Time in China, and A Chinese Ghost Story II, Tsui Hark and Ma Zhong Xuan cooperate once again to present a modern form of martial arts in Xanda. Leading actors Sang Weilin, Zhao Zilong, and Sing Kwan are winners of various national Xanda tournaments in China.

Xanda revolves around Qiang (Sang Weilin) who has been practising kung fu since a young age. Fearing loss, Qiang has not participated in any kung fu contest since winning the national tournament. He is prompted to join a Xanda contest to earn money to pay for his friend's medical expenses. Trained to combine his fundamental kung fu expertise with unorthodox Xanda training, Qiang gears up to win his next championship.

自少習中國武術的強（桑偉淋飾），在贏取套路軍軍後，便沒有參加任何比賽，只留在村裏教小孩耍套路。後來認識了小虞，她外表傷殘，卻有著無比堅毅的生命力。小虞認為強的“冠軍”銜頭只是一種負累，令他不敢再去接受任何挑戰，甚至連殘疾的她也不如。《小虞死後，強傷心地離開家鄉，跟好友蝦仔（李鐵飾）到南方城市深圳闖天下，然後，他始終活在“冠軍”和小虞的陰影下，直至遇上靈（倪景陽飾）。

靈是深圳討生活的歌女，同時也要幫姐姐解決感情糾紛；靈的姐姐愛上了散打冠軍趙威（滕軍飾），但威似乎重視散打多過靈姐。當靈代姐向威提出分手時，剛巧在場的強以為威欺淩弱質女流，竟跟威一夥人大打出手，不僅強被威打倒，蝦仔更慘被打至重傷。由於衝突因靈而起，靈願意承擔蝦的醫療費用，但強只答應一人一半，承諾會儘快還錢給靈。
　　
潦倒的強去找好友阿龍（趙子龍飾）商量，卻被龍的父親鐵教練誤會他是龍的損友。鐵教練在深圳辦散打學校，一心訓練兒子成為最優秀的散打王，故此對龍在武術和武德兩方面的要求都苛刻嚴格。強向龍借錢不逐，卻得悉散打比賽有豐厚的獎金，惟有懇求鐵教練收他為徒。強雖然成為散打學校的學員，卻只被派去做些清潔的雜役工作，完全沒有得到散打的訓練，為爭取參加比賽的機會，強只好要龍暗中傳授。
　　
滿懷希望和信心的強終於可在新人王散打賽中出場，卻在毫無招架之力下慘被擊倒，徹底喪失自信和自尊的強黯然離開鐵的學校，他看來會在挫折中無法再站起來，幸而得到靈的鼓勵和推動，強終於可以重新面對生活，更與靈展開一段幸福的感情。
　　
本來已甘於平淡的強，偶然在電視上看到龍挑戰散打冠軍威的比賽，雙方的激戰，再次喚起強的鬥志，他發覺自己始終是個愛武的武者。龍結果被威打敗，強毅然決定放下平靜幸福的生活，要重上擂臺去證明自我，他不得不暫別靈，以全心投入鐵教練和龍的地獄式特訓，而曾經許諾不會讓彼此成為對方的包袍的靈，也灑脫地與強各走各路；她甚至沒有告訴強，她已經懷了他的孩子。在鐵教練和龍兩父子的悉心訓練下，強終於成為一個優秀的散打選手，並贏得挑戰冠軍的資格，可以與威在擂臺上爭雄。
　　
就在決戰之前，強終於知道懷著他的骨肉的靈要離開深圳，強必須要在最短的時間內完成賽事，才趕得及去車站追回靈。患得患失的強在比賽中無法盡展所長，被威的淩厲攻勢打得焦頭爛額，眼看就要斷送大家的一番心血了，幸得鐵教練和龍鍥而不捨的鼓舞，強終於能夠集中心力，與威展開懾人的最後一戰……
　　
比賽後，傷痕纍纍的強馬上趕去車站，但靈已不知所蹤。傷愈後，強帶著依然創痛的心，重返家鄉，他以為在那裏等著他的，只有小虞的墓，卻原來還有那個已經取代了小虞的女孩：靈。

I don't like it!
It likes the remake of "Rocky IV" with sanda in place of boxe.
A fighter have a traditional training, while another fighter, the champion, have a training with modern tecnologies.
Who will win in the end for you?

If the story is not so good, the fighting scenes aren't very better...
Imagines confused and too near and caothic recordings makes the scenes not clear.

There's only a scene that save this film by a lower vote: a nanquan form trained by the protagonist on the top of mouving T.I.R.s before they pass under a low bridge.
