By the time director Murakawa Toru and actor Matsuda Yusaku teamed up again in 1980 for The Beast to Die (a.k.a. Yaju Shisubeshi), they had already developed a tried-and-true chemistry. The two had previously worked together on The Most Dangerous Game and its two sequels and Resurrection of the Golden Wolf, and this chilling suspense drama would be their final and most mature collaboration. Matsuda went to great lengths to prepare himself for the dark and complex role, departing from his previous slick action personae, and his performance here clearly marks him as one of the defining actors of the 1980s.

After a police officer gets killed in a back alley, his gun is used in a series of armed robberies. With bodies piling and a large amount of money missing, the police are at a lost to find the culprit. Based on a strange lead, detective Kashiwagi (Murota Hideo) closes in on suspect Date Kunihiko (Matsuda Yusaku), a former war reporter who became a translator after returning from Vietnam. The reclusive Date rarely leaves his home, and often listens to classical music. In his demeanor and presence, Kashiwagi finds an inexplicable feeling of coldness, like that of a dead man.
