導演︰行定勳

《北之零年》拍攝耗時一年多，劇組更遠赴北海道取景。由行定勲導演，乃日本知名資深女演員"吉永小百合"第111部電影，「末代武士」渡邊謙、豐川悅司、柳葉敏郎、香川照之、石田百合子、石原里美等大豪華卡司共同主演。製作成本高達15億日圓，動員人數高達7000人，可說是近年來日本少有的超級大作。
吉永小百合在這部電影開拍時就說：「為了拍這部電影，讓我一燃而盡都無所謂。」今年59歲的吉永小百合表示，她當時是抱著生涯最後之作的決心，投入這部以北海道為背景的史詩之作。

由行定勳執導的「北的零年」，是吉永小百合主演的第111部電影，也是她其中片長最長的一部。「北的零年」 長達２小時50分，比1980年小百合主演的「動亂」還長20分鐘。行定導演表示，「北的零年」的毛片長達40萬英尺，但由於小百合的演出精彩，剪輯時為了取捨的問題花了很多時間考量。

《北之零年》描述了明治初期從淡路島遷往北海道的武士和家人在嚴厲的自然環境中始終抱著希望，與北國嚴峻天候狀況對抗的奮鬥、勇敢地生活下去的故事，充滿著希望與勇氣。
