YesAsia Editorial Description

The most awarded Hong Kong singer in 2008, Canto-pop sensation Kay Tse seeks to defend the crown this year with a slew of new projects. After starring in her first movie Love Connected and providing Cantonese dubbing for the anime hit Ponyo on the Cliff, Kay is set to hold her first solo concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum in May, and release her new album titled Yelling before that. The new album contains 10 songs, including her first chart-topping hit in 2009, "Zhu Yingtai", the second plug "Song of the Year", the concert theme song "Yelling", and the Mandarin version of her 2008 mega hit song "The Street of Wedding Invitation", re-titled "Farewell Party".

Kay’s Fantastic Music Set Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
“Yelling” by Kay here is one of the best diverse sounding Canto albums to date. Lots of catchy melodies (but still essentially Canto) and as many song styles (synth pop, rock, jazz, ballad, funk and soul) as animals chasing Kay across the plain in the provided booklet. Considering many HK albums have various song styles as the musical paint box to project many colours of emotion, “Yelling” could have been just another pop mixture of expectation. But contained in Kay’s 6th outing is a well balanced song set, excellent production, great melodies and a diversity of style making for an excellent overall concept of creative imagination amidst projective and ‘generic’ offerings. The arty photo cover art is inventive with humorous dream drama by the animal chase picture.

All songs are excellent. Superb electronic synth pop opener T1 gives an immediate pull and cinematic feel, with strings, haunting and anthem melody, drum beat, chants and Kay’s catchy vocal refrain. T2 features ominous electric guitars bringing a blend of rhythmic canto and grunge-goth rock. A moderate drum beat and vocal for verses, it certainly as a killer rock refrain. For T3 a swift change to 70’s funk soul with jazz trombones bopping along to a pleasant upbeat funky rhythm. A piano led childlike romantic ballad follows with T4. Another slower ballad melody for T5 with piano and Kay’s lovely passionate vocals rising and dipping the scales. Tracks 6 and 7 are two great synth pop tracks. T6’s swift beat funky electronic song by Seasons Lee probably being my favourite from the album. Punchy, fast and rhythmic with excellent refrain. T7’s is more 80s’s style with a funky synth drum beat cruising into a very melodic and gorgeous Canto refrain. Love the electronic piano part. If you love fast catchy songs, you’ll replay and hum this a lot afterwards. Back to ballads with T8 and a song from Eric Kwok, a soulful ballad with strings and a new county feel. T9’s Piano led ballad as a slow beat and a refrain with such a lovely and quite haunting echo vocal, with sweet melodic singing from Kay. Finally a smoky jazz number with piano, double bass and catchy syncopation with Kay’s swift singing conclude this album.

I’ll certainly get Kay’s “Yelling” concert DVD now. I’m reviewing the CD only here so this reflects that issue (although I have the MV double issue). But Kay’s “Yelling” is certainly a vital album to add to your Asian music collection. Brilliant!

She Is Coming Back! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Binary was a bogus, or a different switch.

Kay Tse has finally come back to the abstract world, as well as in Art.

I never give full 10 points because perfection does not exist. Because I like her, I would give her 9.5 for a comeback. The completion rating of the album is 6. Overall rating is 8. Bravo!
