Acclaimed Fifth Wave filmmaker Chen Kaige (Farewell My Concubine) directs Yellow Earth, a stunning and socially-aware drama that takes place in Northern China pre-World War II. Comrade Gu (Wang Hsueh Kei) is a soldier of the Communist army who journeys to the barren Shaanxi province to collect folk songs for the army to sing to inspire the people. But instead of finding songs of happiness and solidarity, he discovers songs of hardship and suffering - reflections of the daily struggles of the rural inhabitants of China's arid northern regions. Still, Gu does inspire young Cuiqiao (Xie Bai), a peasant girl who becomes infatuated with Gu's tales of the freedom the women of the Communist army possess. She desires to follow Gu into the Communist Army, but the realities of her choices are far more unforgiving than she realizes. Director Chen Kaige uses the stark landscapes of China (photographed by cinematographer and future filmmaker Zhang Yimou) to describe the harsh realities of China's frontier, and its struggles beneath both nature and the dominating political upheaval of the times. Yellow Earth is a remarkably moving drama about people affected by the forces of history and inevitably changing cultures.
