This endearing movie focuses on the establishment of the first organized Korean baseball team.
Set in the war-stricken beginning of the twentieth century during which Korea was invaded by foreign world powers, "JSA" and "Foul King" star Song Kang Ho portrays the tale's protagonist Hochang. Supposed to help at his father's tutoring school, the central character soon develops a passionate interest for basball that was imported earlier by the western aggressors. As fate would have it, he stumbles into Jungrim the daughter of a diplomat who knows the western culture inside out including baseball due to frequent visits abroad. After Hochang catches her playing baseball with a group of missionaries in the YMCA, he can't help being attracted to the charming girl...

글 공부보다 운동을 더 좋아하는 선비 호창은 과거 제도가 폐지되자 젊은 시절의 유일한 꿈이었던 암행어사의 목표를 잃고 돼지 오줌보 축구공을 가지고 노는 것으로 하루하루를 보낸다. 그러던 어느날 호창은 YMCA 회관에서 야구를 하는 신여성 정림과 선교사들의 모습을 보게 된다. 호창은 정림에 대한 감정을 키워가며, 야구라는 신문물의 매력이 빠져든다.

종로거리에 황성 YMCA 베쓰뽈 단원 모집이라는 벽보가 붙는다. 가난으로 어린 나이에 지게짐을 지는 쌍둥이 형제, 명성황후의 호위무사였다는 정체불명의 사내, 좌판 상인, 양반 등 호창과 정림을 중심으로 조선 최초의 야구단이 결성된다. YMCA 야구단은 연전연승하며 최강의 야구단으로 자리잡고 황성시민의 사랑을 한 몸에 받게 된다. 이러한 가운데 조선은 을사조약을 체결하고 이에 비분강개한 정림의 아버지는 자결한다.
어쩌면 지금은 우리가 지는 게 당연한 건지도 모릅니다.
을사조약 체결 이후, YMCA야구단의 연습장이 일본군의 주둔지로 바뀌게 되자 이를 계기로 YMCA야구단은 일본군 클럽팀 성남구락부와 1차 대결을 벌인다. 그러나, 경기 전날 친일파에 테러를 감행하다 부상을 입은 투수 대현은 부진을 면치 못하고, 호창 역시 갑작스레 시합을 관전하러 온 아버지의 눈을 피하느라 실력 발휘를 하지 못해 YMCA야구단은 일본팀에 대패하고 만다. 대현은 일본팀의 주장 히데오에게 재대결을 신청하지만, 테러사건의 전모가 발각되면서 테러에 연루되어 있던 정림과 함께 일본군에게 쫓기는 신세가 되고, YMCA 야구단은 해체된다. 낙심한 호창은 선비의 본분대로 학처럼 살겠다는 각오로 낙향한 아버지를 따라 서당일을 돕는다.
9회 경기. 연장전은 없습니다.
정림과 대현을 쫓던 일본군은 YMCA 야구단과의 2차 대결을 마련하고, 갈등 하던 정림과 대현은 위험을 무릅쓰고 황성으로 돌아와 시합에 가담한다.
한 치 앞을 가릴 수 없는 치열한 접전이 계속되고 9회 초 일본팀의 마지막 공격에서 성남구락부의 히데오가 투런 홈런을 쳐내자, YMCA 야구단은 2 :4의 극한 상황으로 몰리게 된다.
한편, 황성 신문을 통해 일본과의 2차 대결 소식을 접한 호창은 서둘러 황성으로 떠나지만, 내일이나 되어야 황성행 기차가 있다는 역무원의 말에 발을 동동 구르는데...

Not US Version
| This DVD should not be called a US Version of the movie. This particular DVD does not have english subtitles. Hell, it's not even spoken in the original Korean language, this DVD is dubbed in only Mandarin & Cantonese. For American watcher, skip this version, but don't skip this movie. |

Through Ho-chang's discovery of baseball and his love for the game, this heart-warming, delightful comedy shows glimpses of the challenges faced by Korea as an evolving nation. It was fascinating for me to see life a very traditional society and how even a quintessential American sport like baseball could pose challenges. Each of the main characters is forced to examine their own lives and grow. You have to be alert since this is sometimes expressed very subtly. The YMCA team was open equally to all the men, but led by a young woman, Min Jungrim, who was educated abroad. Subtle comedic moments ensue as the team members had to deal with this, as well as their class differences and learning how to play baseball. Comedic moments also ensue in Ho-chang's attempt to express his growing love. The growing influence of a militaristic Japan changed the lives of the team members and their families. In the relationships between the sons and fathers, we gain different perspectives of the sides to this conflict. The Seoul YMCA Baseball Team meets their biggest challenge in facing a Japanese baseball team. The captain of the opposing team, Hideo, a young Japanese officer is also caught between his love of baseball and his military obligations. The climax, as in all sports movies, is, of course, THE FINAL GAME and the legacy left behind by these early players of baseball. |

| I absolutely hate this movie. It was sooo bad. I expected better since the lead actor and actress are really good in their field. But ah....the story was awful, poor script, poor pooooor plot...a total waste of time. It is the worst korean movie I have ever seeeen. |

| I saw this movie at the San Francisco Asian American Film Festival, and I have to say that this was a very entertaining movie. I think that I might buy it just to watch it again. |

You have to see this movie.
| I saw this movie when it first came out in Korea this past summer. After I saw this movie, I knew that I had to get it on DVD when it came out. This movie is very funny and entertaining. The soundtrack is really good also. (YG Family did the cover song) It is definetly worth your time and you will not be dissapointed. |
