YesAsia Editorial Description

Who said being a hitman was easy? From director Edmond Pang and producer Vincent Kok comes the 2001 comedy You Shoot, I Shoot, a winning send-up of Hong Kong's economic problems, its lumbering film industry, and the assassination game itself! The story centers on Bart (Eric Kot), an assassin whose business is suffering through some hard times thanks to the Asian economic crisis. His latest client has an interesting proposition for him: Mrs. Ma (Miao Felin) wants to hire Bart to take out a number of people, all because they videotaped her having sex and then released the footage on VCD! To even the score with these amateur pornographers, she wants Bart to film the hit, so he hires a struggling assistant director named Chuen (Chueng Tat Ming) to helm this unique cinematic endeavor!

Chuen, however, fancies himself a real filmmaker and initially balks at the arrangement, but eventually gives in to Bart's request. Chuen, of course, becomes even more resistant to the partnership once the real purpose of Bart's mission is revealed, but despite his objections, he soon finds himself adapting to the situation. Chuen edits the footage into a short film, and before long, this strange two-man hitman/director team become all the rage in the assassination business, earning them even more clients, spawning a couple imitators (Lam Suet and Tats Lau), and forcing an inevitable face-off with local authorities. There's even time for a little romance as sparks start to fly between Chuen and a Japanese erotic film star played by Asuke Higuchi! What will become of Bart and Chuen? Their final fate can be discovered in the brilliantly funny satire You Shoot, I Shoot! Now on special edition DVD, the film contains over sixty minutes of special features including a "making-of" featurette, deleted scenes with director's commentary, a music video, a theatrical trailer, bloopers, and much more!

Hong Kong is an over-crowded city, where people are easily provoked with confilcts and hatred. In such a crammed and hostile place professional hitmen are in demand. Yet, good times never last. Since the Asian financial crisis, the hire-a-hitman business has been going downhill. To make both ends meet, BART, a professional hitman, and CHUEN, an assistant director, are compelled to offer a bargain package 'YOU SHOOT, I SHOOT'.

Professional Review of "You Shoot, I Shoot (DVD Special Collector's Edition) "

View Professional Review:
August 5, 2005

The Asian economic crisis has hit hard: hired killers are reduced to cold-calling to get jobs. Just when Bart the killer looks like he's going to have to mortgage his lifestyle, he creates the latest society craze: a personalized video documentary of your hit. With the initially reluctant but soon far-too-precious assistance of cameraman & Scorsese-wannabe Chuen, the pair embark on a shooting spree, in both senses of the word. It doesn't matter to Chuen how the client dies, just as long as he has full creative control. Bam!

You Shoot, I Shoot gives a knowing nod to the ice cool school of hired killer flicks from Le Samourai to The Killer, and then promptly drills it right between the eyes - even the hitman's mother-in-law has someone she wants whacked. Edmund Pang directs his own screenplay with first-time director energy, simultaneously skewering almost every crime film ever made as well as the whole film-making process. The gags roll as often as the heads, thanks to the perfect comic timing of Eric Kot and Cheung Tat-Ming. The playful editing mixes moments with abandon, and the anything-goes soundtrack adds an extra element of dementia to an already loopy undertaking (I defy you not to come out singing "La la la la la laaaaaaa la" afterward).

Goofy and vibrant, You Shoot, I Shoot shows that even if they don't make 'em so often like they used to in Hong Kong, they sure can take the piss out of them. And remember: the more you kill, the more you save!

10 Real Estate Investing Killers out of 10

This professional review refers to You Shoot, I Shoot

Edmond Pang, the writer of Fulltime Killer, finally directed his first film in 2001. The film is called You Shoot I Shoot. It features two excellent comedians in Hong Kong - Eric Kot and Cheung Tat-Ming. If one has seen Fulltime Killer, it should not be too hard to expect how far Pang is willing to push in his own film. His creativity is allowed to be fully exhibited.

The story is about Bart (Eric Kot), a hitman, who hires a cameraman Chuen (Cheung Tat-Ming) to shoot when he kills. After they get the killing footage, Chuen will do the editing work and make a short film out of it. The two team up and work for rich people who hire them to kill and shoot.

Just from reading this brief synopsis, one should realize how humorous and innovative this story can go. Pang, without disappointing the audience, turns the story into a big farce. He makes a parody of the French classic La Samourai and mocks the absurdity of the society in a funny way. Bart is an admirer of Le Samourai, he always imitates Le Samourai and dresses like Alain Delon in the film. Yet, unlike the lonely Le Samourai, he has a family. No matter how cool he acts, he cannot resist the request of his wife. A hitman living with his wife! You can see how humors are generated from this absurd construction of the characters. The antagonist, Two Pistols Hung (Jim Chim), is not the typical villain you'll see in other comedies. I am not going to disclose too much about this character since it will spoil the fun of watching. All I can say is that the ending is not a cliche.

The theme of this film is similar to Shaolin Soccer in which it encourages people to strive for their hope under extreme bad condition. Even though cameraman Chuen has lost his job and failed to make his dream comes true, he does not give up. Rather than sitting at home and blaming the society, he just keeps on working on his own and conceiving ideas. His "Never say die" spirit is really inspiring for the audience in Hong Kong who are suffering from the economic recession. The positive attitude toward difficult reality promoted by the film creates a spiritual encouragement and it explains why the film is accepted positively in Hong Kong even though it has a negative subject of murdering people.

As a first time effort (Yes, Edmon Pang has not directed anything before prior to this film), You Shoot I Shoot is definitely a big surprise. It is really sad to know that this film failed at the box office, even though it was highly praised by critics. The taste of Hong Kong audience is always unpredictable. I really don't know how to explain why mediocre comedies like Needing You could become the highest grossed film of the year, and high quality ones like You Shoot I Shoot fails to win the respect it deserves. Without doubt, it is one of the most underrated movies of the year.

VCD (HK version) - A nice film deserves a space in your DVD collection.

Hilarious and murderous comedy Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"You Shoot, I Shoot" takes a terrific premise and mines it for pure comic gold. The film's opening scenes are a bit disjointed and uneven, but once Eric Kot and Cheung Tat Ming begin their professional collaboration, "You Shoot" takes flight. Frankly, I never had any idea that Kot could pull off a role of this nature, but he does a wonderful job.

"You Shoot, I Shoot" is the kind of movie you want to tell all your friends about, the kind of film that makes you want to relive its laugh-out-loud funny scenes over and over again. Very, very highly recommended.
