YesAsia Editorial Description

Born in Korea, Younha had always wanted to become a J-pop singer. Her big chance came when a drama producer listened to one of her demo tapes. She went on to sing the song Yubikiri for the Fuji TV drama Tokyo Wankei -Destiny of Love in autumn 2004. 2005 saw another highlight for Younha when her single Hoki Boshi ("Comet"), featured as end title song of the anime Bleach, managed to secure the No. 15 spot on the Oricon charts. Younha has since solidified her status as J-pop star, sending her debut album Go! Younha all the way to the No. 12 position. Younha's captivating smile, her crystal clear voice, and her talent as a songwriter and pianist have turned her into an exemplary figure on the J-pop scene. Now 19-year-old Younha launches her official debut album in Korea.

The album sees her collaborating with high-quality musicians from the K-pop scene. Besides Wheesung who lent her his song writing skills, Younha also teamed up with Hareem and Hwang Chan Hee, and got involved in composing work too. The principal song on Younha's debut Korean album, titled "Secret Code 486" (Track 3), was penned by Wheesung and presents a touching ballad. Also performing "Immature Greed" (Track 10) with Wheesung as well as the titular The perfect day to say I love you (Track 4), Younha is ready for her debut in the Korean music scene.

The Perfect Day for Younha
Having never listened to Younha the J-pop singer, I initially wasn't all that interested in Younha the K-pop singer, and was ready to let this album go by. Fortunately, I had the chance to see her perform live last month, and I was immediately won over by her strong, clear voice and earthy stage charisma. Given that the recent wave of female pop idols has largely displayed more flash (or flesh) than substance, it's certainly refreshing to hear a young singer who can actually sing. Though the album itself could still use some tweaking, the sound Younha offers comes at just the right time. Her up-tempo rock pop and piano ballads fit squarely into mainstream sensibilities, while providing a welcome antidote to the increasingly homogeneous dance pop and ballads the Korean music scene has been serving up lately.

The album opens strong with the moody guitar chords and pulsing beat of Delete (Track 1), a dramatic rock pop number that showcases the singer at her best. Younha's voice rings loud and clear here, flying up to long high notes while maintaining a slight roughness to go with the dark lyrics. Similar in style to Delete, Fly (Track 8) also starts out edgy and atmospheric, and breaks out into an energetic and catchy pop rock chorus. Younha shifts comfortably between high and low, slow and fast, making the song's sudden changes seem smooth.

For a cheerful pop offering, bubbly "Secret Code 486" (Track 3), composed by some guy named Wheesung, is fast, fun, and sassy with a bouncy piano interlude. Wheesung also wrote and composed "Young Desire" (Track 10), and his stamp is a bit clearer here, not the least because his vocals feature in the song. While still a rock pop number, "Young Desire" is less reliant on the piano and has more of an R&B flow, particularly the refrain. Wheesung's rapping feels a bit out of place, but the song is very likable and wraps together well overall.

Younha offers an interesting mix of soft and strong in her voice, and because of this, even her slow numbers feel stronger, louder, and faster than usual K-pop ballads. A perfect example would be title track "The Perfect Day to Say I Love You" (Track 4), an ear-pleasing ballad with a mellow arrangement. The song opens with soft instrumentals - guitar, piano, and Irish whistle - and gradually gathers momentum and volume towards the refrain when she subtly but pronouncedly pulls out the vocals, before returning to a softer tone. Younha controls this build-up and soft-down well, and it's what makes her songs more distinctive. This can be heard even in the particularly quiet and slow tracks like piano numbers "Child - I Cry" (Track 2) and "Only Today" (Track 6), whose otherwise simple, safe, and soulful compositions and arrangements seem to be pulled from the K-drama theme song rulebook.

Still I prefer it when Younha sings her voice out, even if it at times brings her to shakier territory. One of the album's weaker tracks, mid-tempo "Conditions for Love" (Track 7) has an easy, comfortable flow, but the song and the vocals fall a bit flat in the refrain when the melody turns generic. Hello Beautiful Day (Track 5) is an interesting blunder, as the song tries to integrate jazz elements in the piano and brass instrumentation and interlude, but the melody and arrangement seem to live in two different worlds, and not even Younha can make up for the mismatch. Her singing, however, fits perfectly into the album's whimsical last song, "Alice" (Track 11), which goes from quiet ballad to cheery rock pop to fairy dust coda without skipping a beat.

Younha has already attracted a fair amount of attention and praise with The Perfect Day to Say I Love You, and hopefully it'll mean bigger and better things to come for the singer. I for one am looking forward to her next album. Until then, I just may go dig up that J-pop album.

Love it! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Younha's vocals are amazing - she can do rock songs and ballads equally well. My favourite song from this album would probably have to be 'My Lover', and 'Secret code 486'.

Definitely highly recommended.

This made me a fan. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I'm a bit late in joining the Younha fan-bandwagon but I'm glad I got in nonetheless. This album is a superb fusion of Japanese creativity and the addictive Korean sound.

Her petite frame and baby face looks can get quite deceiving as this girl can absolutely rock it out! Comprised mainly of midtempo Pop-Rock and the occassional ballad, this album's style is a bit of rarity in the mainstream KPop market. Nonetheless, it's tremendous success affirms the excellent quality of the album.

This CD's been in my car for at least 1 month now, on constant replay, and I think it's going to remain there for a while. I'd highly recommend this to anyone, any day.

Buy this album you won't be disappointed.
Younha's talent is not limited by her young age, rather, it's her youthfulness and sharp sense of harmony that make this album extremely impressive.
I must recommend Younha's ballads, they showcase her skilled vocal and ability to deliver her emotions through her voice.

one of the best this year Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I first heard of Younha around the time she was still fairly new to the Japanese industry, and most of her Japanese songs didn't leave a lasting impression on me. This album, however, showcases her talent beautifully. Though it never really strays too far from the pop-genre, ensuring it doesn't alienate too many hardcore-mainstream listeners, it does mix in healthy amounts of pop-ballad, rock, and even a few jazz elements, resulting in an album that fits together, but doesn't have you feeling like every song is the same.

Throughout this album, Younha shows off her versatility with genres, powerful vocals, vocal range, and most of all her passion. She easily does powerful rock songs as easily as powerful ballads, showing her flexibility but leaving a trademark sound that belongs distinctly to Younha. The lyrics are, as one might expect, about love; something that usually makes me cringe a bit, but some of them, thankfully, are less cheesy than one might expect from a teenage girl's songs.

Definitely one of my favorite albums of the year. Though this album, as stated, isn't particularly ground-breaking in terms of its style, as it IS a pop album, it's oddly refreshing and fun to listen to. She definitely deserved all the awards she got for this album.
