Yukoku (The Rite of Love and Death) (Japan Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Written, Produced, Directed by and starring acclaimed Japanese author Mishima Yukio, Yukoku, roughly translated as "worry about the state of the nation" is a rare and powerful short film. It tells the true story of high-ranking naval officer Takeyama, who took is own life in the wake of an attempted military coup in 1936. This silent film is shot in stark black and white, echoing the traditions of Noh theatre, using a minimalist setting and just two actors - Mishima as the general and Tsuruoka Yoshiko as his wife Reiko.

The film has very rarely been seen, as Mishima's wife effectively banned it and ordered the destruction of all existing prints, after the events depicted resonated deeply with her after the nationalistic Mishima took his own life in eerily similar fashion in 1970. The film survived however and is now presented in a beautifully restored two-disc set where it can take its place as a revered chapter of Japanese cinematic history.

Special Features:

  • English inter-titled version & French inter-titled version of the film
  • "Yukio Mishima's 2 days"
  • "Yukoku" album
