I've read a lot of reviews about this album that express a lot of disappointment because it didn't sound the same or wasn't the quality of Yoko Kanno's work. I have to say that this was my first Maaya album ever. I've listened to some of her songs before, but the first song I truly fell in love with was "LOOP" and that's where the song came from. Naturally, I loved this album because I've not heard her best songs before. And when I did, I could hear that yes, there feels like something missing from Yuunagi LOOP, but it's not Maaya or her songs. The lyrics, melodies, and Maaya's voice are excellent. She sings with as much emotion and heart as she did for Yoko Kanno. It's just that the instrumentation isn't what it could have been compared to her older works. BUT, but this is her first step in evolving as an artist, doing something new.

To conclude what I am saying: Her first time working with some new producers did cost some quality in the instrumentals of the songs on the album, but Maaya's engaging singing and more matured voice makes up for everything. I fell in love with the songs because of her talent as a singer, expressing the lyrics even though I barely speak any Japanese made up for all of the lack in the background music that has made her voice soared in the past. Not to say that her voice did not soar in this album, it did and it basically made the entire CD (after all, shouldn't it?).

Maaya-Sakamoto's 5th Album. Well, to be honest, I am quite disappointed to this CD. Although Sakamoto sings better than before, the new songs could not develop all Sakamoto's potential. Also, this CD can't really form the "new world of Sakamoto", actually, it is much like her first Album "Grapefruit", songs in different style like the staff are testing Sakamoto's singing ability again. Ok, In fact, the songs are still good, but if we compare with her old albums, the new songs are not good.

The first track itself justifies the purchase of the whole album. In my opinion it's Maaya's best song ever - it's like she was born to sing it. As composer Yoko Kanno discovered long ago, Maaya's voice is complemented best with a steady beat provided by simple yet strong sounding string instrumentals that sound almost Celtic - I'm talking about songs like Yucca (from the album Dive), Mameshiba (Lucy), Makiba Alice! (Shonen Arisu), as well as Loop, also found on this album. The refreshing sound of these high-twang instrumentals are like the zesty tang of a sweet lemon meringue and fuse with Maaya's youthful voice to weave a melody both playful and epic at the same time. If there's still anybody out there that still considers her to be an anime singer, this ought to dispel that notion. I believe Maaya has long established herself as one of the premier artists in Japanese pop - that said, the impression I get from listening to this album is that it's more of a relaxed release: not looking to take over the charts with awe-inspiring music-video kickin hits (with the exception of the first one), but full of tracks that you can slowly enjoy in a quiet room. In that way, this album is not unlike her earlier "Easy Listening" album (with the immortal "birds" as the last track) - Yunagi Loop can be considered an updated version with Maaya's improved style and singing ability. I see it as a real gift to her fans and I absolutely treasure it.
